The Heir Who Shouldn’t Love Me

CHAPTER 94 — The Bondnight

Ch. 94 / 100 Feb 15, 2026

POV: Mara

Candlelight paints the stone walls in warm strokes—honey-soft, gentle, glowing like the world has finally stopped trembling. Outside, the city sleeps under the hush that comes after a war. Inside, everything feels quiet in a way it hasn’t in months.

The room smells like tide smoke, lantern wax, and Cael—storm, steel, something older than memory and sweeter than every prayer I’ve ever whispered. Aster hums low beneath my ribs, her voice a soft tide pushing at the edges of my skin.

Cael steps toward me slowly, like he’s approaching a miracle. Or a cliff he’s ready to leap from. The small bowl of vow-ink sits steady in his hands, silver-gold swirling like caught moonlight.

His eyes are hungry—but gentler than hunger. Older than desire. There’s devotion in them. Fear. Relief. Wonder.

“You’re sure?” he whispers, his thumb brushing along my cheekbone, slow enough to undo me.

“Yes,” I breathe. “Are you?”

His forehead comes to mine, soft and warm. His eyelashes sweep my skin. His breath trembles.

“I’ve never been more certain of anything,” he murmurs.

My heart cracks open.

He dips two fingers into the ink. When he lifts them, the liquid clings like molten silver, shimmering with faint sparks. He touches the base of my Bondmark, and the warmth jolts through me like a gasp I don’t quite have air for.

My thighs press together. My skin shivers. My breath stumbles out of me.

His voice is a reverent murmur, each word spoken like a vow and a confession:

“Mara Ilyas of White-Gold… my equal, my anchor, my storm.”

The ink spreads beneath his fingers, glowing brighter as if recognizing its name. Aster sighs inside me, pleased.

“Cael…” I whisper, dizzy with emotion. “My turn.”

I take his hand, guiding the bowl between us. I dip my own fingers—my hands shake—and the ink coats my skin in gleaming gold.

I press my fingers over his heart, right on the place where I once kissed life back into him. The place where our seal took root. His breath stops—literally stops—caught between ribs.

His eyelashes lower. He trembles.

“Cael Orion Rhyss,” I say softly, voice shaking with love and certainty. “My shield. My match. My home.”

The ink glows brighter—white-gold and storm-blue spiraling together beneath our hands until it looks like we’re holding a star between us. The bond pulses once—twice—and then syncs: breath, heartbeat, want, everything aligning.

“Mara…” he whispers, voice rough.

“Yes?” My hands stay on his chest. His stay on my waist.

“I need you.”

The sound of it breaks something tender inside me. I pull him down into a kiss that steals both our breaths. His mouth is heat and ache and devotion. The room dissolves around us—candlelight, shadows, the world—everything falling away except his hands and my skin.

His lips trail down my jaw, my throat, the tender place beneath my ear. I arch into him, fingers gripping his shoulders as if that alone is keeping me upright. The bond flares, bright and consuming.

When our marks meet—skin to skin—everything shatters beautifully.

It feels like stepping into moonlight after a lifetime in shadow. A surge of heat. A soft shock. A rise so deep it feels like floating.

A gasp breaks from me. A groan breaks from him.

We move like tide and shore—slow first, then desperate, then slow again—guided by instinct, bond, devotion. Guided by the truth we’ve been circling for months. Guided by something both larger and smaller than prophecy.

It’s not frantic. It’s not wild. It’s profound. A building of trust. A claiming without cages. A vow without words.

I breathe and I moan and I allow Cael to take over both my body and my soul.

When we finally collapse together in a tangle of limbs and sheets, his chest rises and falls beneath my cheek. Our marks glow faintly—twin embers pulsing in rhythm.

He wraps his arms around me, drawing me close like I’m something sacred.

“Don’t sleep yet,” he murmurs, voice warm and lazy.

“Why not?” I hum.

“Because I want to hear you breathe.”

I laugh softly, brushing my nose against his skin. “You’ll hear it all night.”

“I know,” he says, a smile in his voice. “That’s the point.”

His fingers stroke my hair. My hand rests on his heart. The bond curls around us like a blanket.

Dawn begins to paint the room gold.

We fall asleep in each other’s arms—tired, healed, whole—two breaths, one rhythm, one future.
