Luca stood in the doorway, his gun still raised, his heart aching at the scene before him.
Matteo stood in the middle of the room, his small body trembling, his big brown eyes darting between Carmen and Marco.
He looked so lost. So confused.
Like he wanted to run to them—but something held him back.
Marco, his father—the man Matteo used to cling to, the man who had once been his hero—stood only a few feet away.
And Matteo couldn’t even look at him.
Luca felt something tighten in his chest. This was Marco’s son.
The boy Marco had killed for. Fought for. Bled for. And now? Matteo didn’t even know if he could trust him. It was painful to watch. Carmen’s voice was gentle, desperate.
“Baby, please,” she whispered. “Let’s go home.”
Matteo’s tiny hands curled into fists.
“I… I don’t know,” he whispered, his voice breaking.
Luca took a slow breath. Marco and Carmen were too emotional right now. Matteo was scared, conflicted.
And Luca knew that if they pushed him too hard, he’d pull away completely. So Luca did the only thing he could think of.
He crouched down right in front of Matteo, balancing on the balls of his feet so that he was at eye level with the little boy.
His tone was calm, easy. Not commanding. Not pleading. Just… talking.
“Hey, kid,” he said softly. “Can I tell you something?”
Matteo blinked, hesitating. But he nodded. Luca gave a small smile. “You don’t know me that well, huh?”
Matteo sniffled. “You’re Papa’s friend.”
“That’s right,” Luca nodded. “I’ve known your dad for a long time. And trust me, he’s a pain in the butt sometimes.”
A tiny flicker of something passed through Matteo’s eyes.
Not fear. Not doubt. Something… else. Luca leaned in slightly.
“You know what else I know?” he said. “I know your Papa would do anything for you. And I mean anything. You’re his whole world, kid.”
Matteo bit his lip, his tiny shoulders shaking.
“But Ella said—”
“I know what she said,” Luca cut in gently. “She made you feel safe, right?”
Matteo hesitated. “I think so.”
“She gave you hugs, told you stories, took care of you.”
Matteo nodded slowly. “She made it seem like you were special. Like you were hers.”
Matteo sucked in a shaky breath. Luca softened his voice even more.
“That’s what bad people do sometimes, Matteo. They tell you things that sound nice, things that make you feel warm inside. But just because something sounds good… doesn’t mean it’s true.”
Matteo blinked up at him. Luca tapped his own chest, right over his heart. “You feel that? That weird, twisty feeling inside you right now?”
Matteo nodded. “That’s because deep down, you already know the truth,” Luca whispered.
Matteo’s lip trembled. “But I don’t know what’s real,” he admitted, his voice small, broken.
Luca nodded slowly. “That’s okay, kid,” he said. “You don’t have to have all the answers right now. You just have to trust one thing.”
“What?” Matteo asked.
Luca smiled.
“That your real family will always come for you. No matter what.”
Matteo’s breath hitched. Luca tilted his head toward Marco and Carmen.
“Look at them.”
Matteo hesitated. But then…
He finally turned his head. Marco and Carmen stood there, raw, broken, waiting. Tears ran silently down Carmen’s face, her arms aching to hold him.
Marco—**the strongest man Matteo had ever known—**stood stiffly, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked painful.
His father. His mother. And suddenly, Matteo felt something break inside him.
Ella’s voice told him to stay. To run. To never go back.
But Luca’s voice—
Luca’s words—
They made sense. He looked at Carmen again. At Marco.
Then—Matteo took one shaky step forward.
And another. And before he could stop himself—
He ran straight into his mother’s arms. Carmen let out a sob, clutching him so tightly she thought she might break.
“Baby,” she cried. “My baby.”
Matteo buried his face in her neck, his little hands grabbing fistfuls of her shirt.
Marco was frozen in place, his chest rising and falling heavily.
Then Matteo turned—and looked straight at him.
For the first time since this nightmare began, Matteo saw his father. Really saw him. Marco took a step forward, his hands shaking.
“Come here, kid,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.
Matteo didn’t hesitate. He threw himself into his father’s arms.
Marco caught him instantly, lifting him up like he was the most precious thing in the world.
“I got you, bud,” Marco whispered, his voice breaking.
Matteo clung to him, his tiny fingers digging into Marco’s back.
“Papa,” he sobbed.
Marco shut his eyes, pressing a firm kiss against the top of his son’s head.
“I’m here,” he murmured. “And I’m never letting go.”
