[POV: Atlas]
Draven stood inches from me, his chest rising and falling with barely contained restraint, his eyes fixed on mine like I was both his salvation and the edge of a cliff he was about to leap from.
There was no demand in his gaze, no arrogance, no pressure. Just… waiting. Patient despite the tension radiating from every line of his body.
My heart thudded so loud it drowned out the forest around us, the rustling leaves and distant night sounds fading until there was only him, only us. I could still feel the echo of his words — Then why do you taste like fate? — like they were etched along my skin, branded into my soul.
I stared at him, trying to make sense of the chaos inside me, trying to find some logical reason to pull away, to protect him from what I was. But there was no logic left. No reason. Only the aching thrum in my chest, the way the whole world narrowed down to this moment—this man—and the undeniable truth that had been building between us.
My hand lifted slowly, trembling slightly, and found the solid curve of his chest. His heart pounding beneath my palm—strong, steady, and wild all at once. Like him. Like us. Like whatever this was between us.
The second I touched him, his breath hitched audibly. And then he closed the distance, eliminating the last inch of space between us.
His lips brushed mine. A reverent touch, an aching whisper of a kiss. Like a question. As if he were giving me one last chance to stop him, to pull away, to choose safety over this dangerous connection.
I didn't. Couldn't. Instead, I leaned in, parting my lips just enough for him to understand what I needed. Him. All of him.
The kiss deepened slowly, tender at first. His mouth moved over mine like he was memorizing every curve, every breath, every response, with the kind of tenderness I didn't know he possessed.
Every inch of his body was tight, trembling with restraint I could feel in every point of contact. I could feel it in his grip on my waist—gentle but desperate—in the way he kissed me like I was made of something breakable.
It shattered me. Because I didn't want it to be soft. Not now. Not with him. I'd had soft with Evan.
I wanted the fire I'd seen in his eyes when he stepped out of the shadows, jealousy and possession burning bright. The storm in his voice after he saw the kiss, raw and wounded. The wolf who stalked me like I was his only truth. The man who called me 'mine'—and meant it with every fiber of his being.
A sound tore from my throat—half whimper, half growl, desperate and needy—and I grabbed the front of his shirt, twisting the fabric in my fists as I pulled him closer, eliminating any remaining distance.
His breath caught, harsh and raw, and suddenly his hands were everywhere—no longer careful, no longer measured. Bolder. Rougher. Claiming.
One slid up my spine, fingers splayed wide, pressing into my back, holding me like he didn't trust the ground beneath him, like I was the only solid thing in his world.
The other curved around the back of my neck, strong and possessive, tilting my head at the right angle, deepening the kiss until I couldn't think, couldn't breathe, couldn't exist without him.
We crashed together like a storm meeting flame—wild, uncontrollable, inevitable. Like forces of nature that had been circling each other too long and finally collided.
When he pulled back, just enough to breathe, just enough to let air into our burning lungs, his forehead dropped to mine. His voice came out hoarse, wrecked.
"You ruin me," he whispered, his lips brushing mine even as he spoke, unable to pull completely away. "I can't think when you're near. Can't focus on anything but you."
"Then don't think," I breathed, dragging him back to me, threading my fingers through his hair.
He kissed me again, harder this time. His mouth crushed mine, desperation unraveling between us like a thread pulled too tight, like something held back too long finally set free.
Another breathless pause, both of us gasping. Another kiss to the corner of my mouth, tender despite the intensity.
"Tell me you feel this too," he demanded, voice rough with need and fear. "Tell me I'm not alone in this."
My chest ached. I could barely speak, barely breathe past the emotion. "I do," I whispered against him, the admission costing everything and nothing all at once. "I feel it. All of it."
"I'll wait forever if I have to," he rasped, words broken by kisses to my jaw, my neck, my pulse point where he could feel my racing heartbeat. "But Goddess, Atlas..."
His mouth returned to mine like gravity pulling him back home, like he couldn't stay away even if he wanted to. "I need you."
I gasped into him, my whole body burning, every nerve ending alive with sensation, my soul howling in recognition. Because it wasn't just lust, wasn't just physical desire.
The bond. The pull. The mate bond that I'd tried to deny, tried to ignore, tried to protect him from. I felt it in every brush of skin, every tangled breath, every point where our bodies touched. This was fate clawing its way to the surface, undeniable and inevitable.
His hand tangled in my hair, fingers threading through the strands and gripping tight. The other slid around my hip, strong fingers digging into my flesh, hauling me against him until there was nothing left between us but heat and breath and desperate need. And the terrifying, beautiful truth I couldn't deny anymore.
He wasn't just my Alpha. Wasn't just the leader of the pack that had taken me in. "This is it," Hyde whispered inside me, quiet but certain, more sure than he'd ever been about anything. "He's the one. Our mate. Finally."
My heart clenched, so full it hurt, so overwhelmed with emotion I thought it might burst. I pulled back just enough to look into his eyes—those eyes I saw when I closed mine at night, the ones that haunted my dreams and soothed my fears, storm-grey and endless and seeing straight through to my soul.
His forehead rested against mine, both of us breathless, both of us trembling, both of us stripped bare of all pretense.
"I've never wanted anything like I want you," he said, voice hoarse with everything he was trying to hold back, everything he was feeling. "Nothing has ever mattered like you matter."
I reached up and cradled his jaw, my thumb grazing the sharp line of his cheek, the stubble rough under my touch. He leaned into the touch like it anchored him, like I was the only thing keeping him grounded.
"I know," I whispered, unable to lie anymore, unable to pretend this wasn't real, wasn't everything. "I feel it too. This thing between us—it's terrifying. But it's real."
His breath trembled, shaky and unsteady, and I saw something crack in his expression—relief, hope, joy, fear, all mixed together.
And then he kissed me again—his mouth claimed mine with renewed intensity, our bodies molded tight together like puzzle pieces finally clicking into place, and I drowned in him. In us. In the rightness of this moment despite everything that stood against us.
In the bond that was already fusing our souls together, weaving us into one entity, marking us as mates in a way that could never be undone.
My mate. Mine. The destroyer and the alpha. The cursed one and the pack leader. And somehow, against all odds and prophecies, we fit.
