The Alpha Mate

Chapter 39

Ch. 39 / 120 May 04, 2026

The day of the third and final trial had finally arrived: Territorial Combat. I stood at the edge of the combat grounds, my heart pounding fiercely as a surge of adrenaline rushed through me, filling every nerve with sharp anticipation. But unlike before, unlike all those times I'd stood trembling with fear, I wasn't afraid.

Now I felt prepared. After the long night I'd spent in my wolf form, finally bonded completely with Hyde, something deep within me had shifted. I felt stronger, more confident, more alive than ever before. It was as if I'd been walking through life half-asleep, and now I'd finally woken up.

Hyde's presence thrummed through me now, steady and sure, a constant warmth in the back of my mind. My body felt powerful, every muscle ready and eager for what was to come.

The run I'd shared with Draven still lingered fresh in my memory—the way his wolf moved, graceful yet fierce, his strength blending effortlessly with speed. The way Sirius had pressed his head against mine in that moonlit clearing.

"We can do this," Hyde's voice echoed in my mind, strong and reassuring. "Trust me. Trust us."

I nodded slightly to myself, breathing deeply as Draven's voice boomed across the field, outlining the rules of the final challenge. He stood at the center of the grounds, commanding and magnificent, every inch the Alpha he was born to be.

"Today's trial will test your strength, your courage, and your instincts," he declared, his voice carrying over the assembled wolves. "Each of you must defend your territory while conquering others. Use everything you've learned. Fight with honor and strength—and above all, never give up."

He paused, his gaze briefly catching mine across the crowd. His dark eyes burned into mine, fierce and unwavering, filled with something that made my breath catch. My pulse quickened, yet this time I held his gaze confidently. I wouldn't back down. Not anymore. Those days were behind me.

The horn sounded sharply, signaling the start of the trial. The participants burst into motion, wolves sprinting in every direction, each claiming their ground. I shifted seamlessly—the transformation coming so much easier now—and moved swiftly to my designated territory, a small wooded area marked by red flags.

Immediately, I assessed my surroundings, mentally mapping strategic points of attack and defense.

This wasn't new to me. The harsh, relentless training I'd endured in Midnight Crest rose instinctively to the surface. Even though they'd never truly accepted me, my former pack had drilled combat skills into my bones.

I'd suffered through countless brutal sessions—pushed to the brink until I could barely stand, forced to fight stronger, faster wolves who showed no mercy. Yet now, strangely, I felt grateful for it. Those painful memories had forged me into something stronger, something ready.

All that suffering hadn't been for nothing. Within moments, the first challenger approached—a lean grey wolf lunging toward me from the trees, aiming straight for my flank. Emmett. Without hesitation, I pivoted, sidestepping gracefully and allowing him to sail past.

My jaws clamped onto his scruff as I twisted, hurling him away with a strength that surprised even me. He landed roughly but regained his footing quickly, eyes flashing with surprise.

He charged again, but I met him head-on this time, channeling every ounce of discipline I'd learned. Our bodies collided with a thunderous impact, and after a fierce struggle, I pinned him firmly beneath my paws. He whimpered in defeat, quickly yielding.

One down. A spark of pride blossomed within me, growing stronger as I defended my territory from Noelle, then Russell. Each victory solidified my confidence, reinforcing the bond with Hyde until we moved as one seamless unit.

By the time I reached the final confrontation—against Bren’s large brown wolf—I was exhausted but determined.

Bren was strong, clever, and aggressive, his reputation as one of the fiercest competitors well-earned. But his attacks became predictable under pressure, following patterns I'd learned to read.

I moved quickly, dodging his lunges, countering each strike with precise timing. Finally, seeing an opening, I surged forward, slamming into his side and pinning him to the ground. He snarled, resisting briefly—but I pressed firmly, refusing to let go until he yielded with a reluctant whine.

When Bren surrendered, silence fell over the crowd. Panting heavily, I stepped back, adrenaline still blazing through every inch of my body. Slowly, I shifted back into my human form, breathless and bruised, my body trembling from exertion.

All eyes were on me—some astonished, others approving. But among them, it was Draven's gaze I sought. His expression was filled with quiet admiration, pride flickering openly in his dark eyes. Warmth flooded my chest at the sight.

I'd won. I didn’t want to think I couldn’t, but the chances of that, seeing the results of the first two trials, were unpleasantly high.

And still—I won. Against all odds. Because I’m strong enough to do so. So now—time to reap the rewards.

With tournament finished, it was time for the ceremony. Later that afternoon, everyone gathered in the central courtyard, where Draven stood tall and proud before the pack, ready for the formal ceremony where the successful wolves received their official marks, becoming recognized members of the Crimson Fang.

Draven's deep voice carried clearly across the assembly. "Today, we welcome these young warriors officially into our pack. Each of them has demonstrated courage, strength, and resilience worthy of our family."

Beside me stood Noelle, Emmett, and Russell. Each of them had succeeded—Noelle swift and cunning, Emmett and Russell relentless and determined. I felt a swell of pride for my friends, grateful beyond words for their support throughout the trials.

From across the circle, I caught Piper’s gaze. She was still watching me like she hadn't quite believed what she'd seen earlier. She'd been the first to know that I couldn't shift, the first person I'd trusted with that shameful secret.

Now, her eyes shimmered with stunned awe, her lips parted slightly as if she still couldn't find the words. I'd seen the way she'd gasped when my wolf burst through for the first time—half in shock, half in disbelief, like she was witnessing something impossible. Because for me, it had been.

She'd stayed silent through it all, kept my secret safe. But now, as the ceremony continued, she gave the smallest nod. Not for the others. For me. And I felt it in my bones—that she was proud. That she understood how much it had cost me to get here.

Draven stepped toward us, his gaze warm and approving as he addressed the successful candidates. "You've each earned your place among us. Now you may tell me where you would like your marks."

Noelle stepped forward first, her voice clear and confident. "My right forearm." Draven nodded, pressing his palm gently against her skin. The dark mark bloomed beneath his touch, vibrant and beautiful against her bronze skin.

Emmett and Russell followed, each choosing their right shoulders, proudly receiving their marks with barely contained excitement.

Then it was my turn. I stepped toward Draven, meeting his eyes steadily, my heartbeat quickening beneath the intensity of his gaze. The space between us felt charged, electric with unspoken things.

"And you?" His voice softened slightly, his dark eyes filled with quiet expectation and something warmer beneath.

Without hesitation, I spoke clearly, confidently. "My chest," I said, placing my hand gently over my heart. "Here. Above my heart."
