Surrogate Mother For My Friend's Stepfather

Chapter 19

Ch. 19 / 30 Dec 11, 2025

Everything changed the moment Eleanor's lie was exposed.

The wall between Stefan and me didn't just crack—it collapsed entirely, crumbling into dust that scattered across the carefully maintained boundaries we'd both pretended to respect.

We no longer hid our feelings from each other, though we carefully concealed them from everyone else.

Stefan insisted there was no point confronting Eleanor yet. Let her think everything was still going according to her plan. Let her believe she was winning.

Meanwhile, we arranged bold, risky encounters right under Eleanor's nose.

Stolen kisses in the pantry while she took a phone call in the next room, my back pressed against shelves of imported olive oil and gourmet pasta.

Hands intertwined beneath the dinner table while Eleanor droned on about merger negotiations, Stefan's thumb tracing circles on my palm.

Hushed conversations in darkened hallways after midnight, pressed against walls like teenagers sneaking around after curfew.

The danger made everything more intense. More intoxicating. More terrifying.

One afternoon, my phone buzzed with a text.

From Harper: Just had lunch with Stefan. He looks SO happy, like genuinely happy for the first time in years.

Whatever's going on with him and Mom must be working. Maybe the surrogacy stuff is finally back on track? I'm glad things are looking up for them.

I stared at the message, my throat tight.

The guilt gnawed at me constantly. Every text from Harper felt like a knife sliding between my ribs. Every casual update about her life with Derek reminded me of what I was risking.

I didn't know how to tell her the truth. Didn't know if there even was a right way to say the words that would destroy everything.

A few days later, Eleanor left for another business trip. Some conference in Miami, or maybe it was a client meeting in Dallas. I'd stopped keeping track of her excuses. All that mattered was that she was gone.

The moment her car disappeared down the driveway, the atmosphere in the house shifted.

Stefan found me in the kitchen, where I was pretending to make coffee I didn't want. He didn't say anything at first—just walked up behind me, wrapped his arms around my waist, and pressed his lips to the curve of my neck.

I turned in his arms, and he pulled me into a kiss that left me breathless—deep and hungry and completely uninhibited.

"Upstairs," he said against my lips. "My bedroom."

We barely made it through the door before clothes started coming off.

Stefan's shirt hit the floor first, then my dress pooled at my feet. We tumbled onto his bed in nothing but our underwear, hands everywhere, mouths desperate.

“I want you,” Stefan's whisper was lost in my hair as his wet kisses rained down on my neck and chest. “In every single position.”

I lost myself in the sensation of his skin against mine, the weight of him above me, the way he whispered my name like a prayer.

We were so caught up in each other that we lost contact with the entire world. Didn't hear footsteps on the stairs. Didn't hear anything at all until…

"What the FUCK?!"

My blood turned to ice.

I scrambled upright, clutching a pillow to my chest, my heart slamming against my ribs so hard I thought it might break through. And there, standing in the bedroom doorway, was Harper.

Her face cycled through expressions like a slot machine, shock, confusion, denial, before settling on horrified disbelief. Her keys dangled from her limp fingers.

"Harper…" Stefan started, reaching for his shirt with fumbling hands.

"What the ACTUAL fuck?!" Harper repeated, louder this time, her voice cracking on the word like glass shattering.

"It's not what it looks like, " My voice came out strangled, barely recognizable as my own. "Just don't jump to conclusions…"

"What exactly am I supposed to conclude, Lila?" Harper yelled. "You're in your underwear! In my stepfather's bed!"

"Harper, please…"

"I could wash my eyes with acetone and I still wouldn't be able to unsee this." Her whole body was shaking, trembling like a leaf in a hurricane. "Jesus, get fucking dressed already.”

She turned and stormed out, the sound of her heavy steps would haunt me forever.

Stefan and I scrambled for our clothes, talking over each other in panicked whispers.

"What do we tell her? What can we possibly say?"

"The truth," Stefan said grimly, buttoning his shirt with unsteady fingers. "We tell her the truth. All of it."

Downstairs, Harper sat rigidly at the kitchen table, arms crossed over her chest like armor, face pale with fury.

She didn't look at us when we entered—just stared at a fixed point on the wall, jaw clenched so tight I could see the muscle jumping beneath her skin.

"You better give me some damn good explanations." her voice was flat and cold.

Stefan explained about Eleanor—the bribes, the sabotage, the deliberate delays to the surrogacy. He explained that his marriage had been dying for years, that what happened between us wasn't planned or calculated.

I tried to explain my side—the crush I'd carried for years, the surrogacy application, how everything had spiraled beyond my control.

Harper listened in stony silence, her expression revealing nothing.

When we finally finished, she spoke.

"So let me get this straight." Her voice was cold, controlled—more terrifying than screaming would have been. "Stefan, you've been fucking my best friend behind my mother's back. And mine’s back."

She turned to face me, and the betrayal in her eyes cut deeper than any words ever could.

"And Lila—you've been lying to me for months. Years, apparently." She paused, and when she spoke again, her voice cracked. "Were we ever actually friends? Or was I just your way of getting closer to him?"

"Harper, no!.."

"Did you apply to be their surrogate because you wanted the money, or because you wanted to worm your way into this family? Into his bed?"

"It wasn't like that…"

"How could you do this to me?" Harper's composure cracked, tears spilling down her cheeks in rivulets she didn't bother to wipe away.

“You're my best friend, Lila. My only real friend. And you…" she turned to Stefan, "you're supposed to be my family. Maybe not by blood, but you said it yourself—family isn't about blood. Remember that? Was that a lie too?"

"Harper, I love you," Stefan said quietly. "That hasn't changed."

"Don't." Harper stood abruptly, her chair scraping against the floor with a sound like a scream. "Don't you dare talk to me about love right now. You're disgusting. Both of you."

She grabbed her purse and headed for the door.

"Harper, wait!.." I rose, desperate, reaching for her.

"Stay away from me." Her voice broke on the words. "I mean it. I can't even look at either of you right now."

The door slammed behind her.

Silence descended on the kitchen, heavy and suffocating, pressing down on us like a physical weight. I sank back into my chair, tears streaming down my face.

"Will she tell Eleanor?" I asked into the void.

Stefan shook his head slowly and buried his face in his hands. He was as lost as I was, and for the first time since this all began, I had no idea what came next.
