Chapter 171

Ch. 171 / 205 May 09, 2026

Violet’s POV

The line between friendship and something else dissolves on a night that starts with a sorority party and ends in Marvin's apartment.

I don't plan it. Don't consciously decide that tonight is the night everything changes. The party is mandatory—another mixer with a fraternity whose Greek letters I forget within minutes of arrival—and I'm three drinks in when Marvin materializes beside me with that golden smile and asks if I want to get out of here.

I say yes.

The walk across campus feels longer than it should, autumn air sharp against my flushed cheeks, and somewhere between the third drink and his apartment door I stop pretending I don't want what he's offering. The pretending was exhausting anyway. Months of careful boundaries and just friends and the particular performance of not noticing the way he looks at me—all of it dissolves into something simpler.

Want. His and mine, finally aligned.

His apartment is cleaner than I expected. Athletic scholarship housing, but he's made it his—photos on the walls, string lights casting warm amber across furniture that actually matches. He asks if I want water or another drink or anything at all, and the nervous energy underneath his confidence makes something warm unfurl in my chest.

"I want you to kiss me," I tell him, because I'm done waiting for things to happen to me.

He crosses the room in three steps.

His mouth finds mine with hunger he's been hiding for months, and the force of it pushes me back against the wall. One hand cups my jaw while the other slides to the small of my back, pulling me against him until I can feel every line of his body through the thin fabric between us. He's warm everywhere—golden skin radiating heat like he's been standing in sunlight—and when I part my lips his tongue sweeps against mine with a groan that vibrates through my entire body.

"God, Violet." He breathes my name against my mouth like a prayer. "Do you have any idea how long I've wanted this?"

"Show me."

He lifts me without breaking the kiss, my legs wrapping around his waist as he carries me toward the bedroom. The strength in his arms doesn't surprise me—I've watched him on the lacrosse field, watched those muscles work beneath his jersey—but feeling it directed at me, feeling myself held like I weigh nothing, sends heat pooling low in my belly.

He lays me on the bed with surprising gentleness, hovering above me while his eyes trace my face like he's memorizing this moment. The contrast between the urgency of his kiss and the tenderness of his gaze does something complicated to my chest.

"You're beautiful." His voice is rough, reverent. "You know that, right? Every time I see you across campus, I forget how to think."

"Then stop thinking." I pull him down by the collar. "Start touching."

His hands find the hem of my shirt and he peels it away slowly, deliberately, his fingers trailing fire across every inch of skin he reveals. When he reaches my bra, he pauses—meeting my eyes for permission I give with a nod—and then the lace is gone and his mouth is on me, tongue circling my nipple until I arch off the mattress with a sound I don't recognize as my own.

"So responsive." He switches to the other breast, teeth grazing sensitive skin. "I want to learn everything that makes you sound like that."

He takes his time. Explores every response like I'm a language he intends to speak fluently. His mouth traces paths down my stomach while his fingers hook into my waistband, and when he finally slides my jeans away his breath catches at the sight of me.

"Violet." My name sounds different in his mouth now—darker, hungrier. "Tell me what you want. I'll give you anything."

"Your mouth." The words come out brazen, bold. "I want your mouth on me."

He groans like I've given him a gift and settles between my thighs with the focused intensity of an athlete approaching the most important game of his life. The first stroke of his tongue makes my hips buck off the bed, and he responds by pressing one hand flat against my stomach, holding me still while he devours me with devastating precision.

He learns me fast. Discovers that I like it when he flattens his tongue and presses hard, that circling my clit makes me grab the sheets, that sliding two fingers inside me while he sucks sends sparks across my vision. He builds the pleasure like he's constructing something—layer upon layer until I'm trembling, gasping, begging in words that barely form.

"Come for me." His voice vibrates against my most sensitive flesh. "I want to feel it."

The orgasm crashes through me like a wave breaking, my back arching, his name tearing from my throat. He works me through every aftershock, gentling but not stopping, until I'm boneless and shaking and pulling at his hair to bring him back up.

"Inside me." I reach for his belt with hands that won't quite steady. "Now. Please."

He strips off his remaining clothes with efficient urgency, and God—he's beautiful. All golden skin and sculpted muscle, the body of someone who's trained it into a weapon. When he rolls on a condom and positions himself at my entrance, his arms shake slightly with the effort of holding back.

"You're sure?" Even now, even desperate, he asks.

"I'm sure."

He slides inside me with one long stroke, and we both gasp at the sensation—the stretch, the fullness, the particular intimacy of two bodies becoming one. He's big, bigger than I expected, and he gives me a moment to adjust before starting to move.

His rhythm is confident but attentive. When I dig my nails into his shoulders he thrusts deeper. When I wrap my legs around his waist he groans and drops his forehead to mine.

"You feel incredible." He's moving faster now. "I've thought about this every night for months."

The confession pushes me higher. I meet him thrust for thrust, the pleasure building impossibly. He reaches between us, rubbing tight circles that match his thrusts, and the dual sensation shatters me. I come with a cry, walls clenching around him, pulling him over the edge. He buries himself deep and groans my name, his whole body shuddering.

The collapse afterward is gentle. He pulls me against him, both of us breathing hard.

But lying in his sheets afterward, I wait for the devastating fullness I felt with Zachary and find something softer instead. Something that doesn't threaten to consume me.

With Zachary, sex felt like being cracked open. This feels like comfort. Like warmth.

I don't know which one I'm supposed to prefer.

Marvin traces patterns on my shoulder. "You okay?"

"Yes." Mostly true. "That was—you're very good at that."

He doesn't ask about exclusivity or what this means. Just holds me with easy confidence.

I wait until my heartbeat settles before shifting toward the edge. "I should go."

"You could stay."

"I have a thing tomorrow."

At the door, I stop him. "One condition. This stays private. No public acknowledgment. I'm not ready to be seen as your girlfriend."

Marvin's expression flickers—disappointment he doesn't quite hide. "For now."

"For now," I agree, though we both know I'm not agreeing to what he's actually asking.

He walks me back, holding my hand until we're close enough that someone might see. At my building, he kisses me once—soft, careful.

"Goodnight, Violet."

I watch him disappear into darkness. Gemma is asleep. The sheets are cold. My skin still carries his warmth.

I've started something I don't know how to finish.

Tomorrow I'll figure out what it means.

Tonight, I just let the questions exist without answers.
