Ride the Cowboy

Chapter 122

Ch. 122 / 205 May 09, 2026

His apartment is smaller than I expected.

Not small—just not the sprawling bachelor pad I'd imagined a thirty-five-year-old executive would have. It's masculine in the way good furniture and clean lines are masculine, everything deliberate and nothing excessive. A leather couch the color of bourbon. Bookshelves that actually hold books. Windows overlooking a street I don't recognize.

I move through his space like I'm reading him, learning what he keeps and what he doesn't. No photographs. No clutter. Just the bones of a life built around work and control and not letting anyone in too close.

"Drink?" His voice comes from behind me, rough around the edges.

"Sure."

He pours whiskey into two glasses, and I watch his hands—steady and confident until they're not. The bottle clinks against the rim. Small sound. Seismic shift.

He drinks his in one motion, like he needs the courage, and sets the glass down hard enough that I hear it.

Then he's crossing to me, and everything else stops mattering.

The kiss dismantles me.

His mouth is demanding and patient at once, taking what he wants while giving me time to catch up, and when his hands find my waist I understand that everything before this moment was pretending to be passion. This is the real thing—raw and consuming and terrifyingly honest.

"Violet," he breathes against my mouth, and my name sounds like a prayer and a warning all at once.

"Don't stop," I tell him, and he doesn't.

His hands slide under my shirt, palms hot against my skin, and I arch into him without thinking. My body knows what it wants even if my brain is three steps behind, and what it wants is more—more contact, more heat, more of whatever this is that's burning through my bloodstream like wildfire.

We don't make it past the living room.

He backs me toward the couch, his mouth on my neck, and I'm pulling at his shirt, desperate to feel skin against skin. He's himself in a way I've never seen him be—no performance, no measured professionalism, just want and heat and the kind of intensity that rewrites what I thought my body was capable of feeling.

"Tell me what you want," he says against my throat, and the command in his voice makes my knees weak.

"You." It comes out breathless. "I want you."

He pulls back just enough to look at me, his eyes dark and hungry, and then he's kissing me again—deeper this time, more urgent. His hands map my body like he's memorizing every curve, every response, and when he touches me through my jeans I make a sound I've never made before.

"God, Violet." His voice is wrecked. "You're—"

"Don't think," I interrupt, kissing him harder. "Just feel."

His hands work my jeans open, and I'm helping him, kicking them off along with everything else that's in the way. He's doing the same, and then there's just skin and heat and the weight of him pressing me into the couch cushions.

I've never felt anything like this. His mouth on my breast, his hand between my thighs, the way my body responds to him like it's been waiting for this exact touch. He knows exactly what he's doing, and I'm coming apart under his hands, whimpering and begging and completely shameless.

"You're so wet," he murmurs against my skin, and the words send fresh heat through me. "So perfect."

His fingers work me higher, and I can feel the tension building, my body chasing something just out of reach. Then he pulls back, breathing hard, and reaches for his wallet.

"I need—" He stops, fumbling for the condom. "Just give me a second."

And that's when reality crashes through the haze.

"Wait." My voice cracks. "Zachary, wait."

He freezes, concern flooding his expression. "What's wrong? Did I hurt you?"

"No, I just—" The words stick in my throat. "I need to tell you something."

He sits back, giving me space, and I pull the throw blanket over myself like it can protect me from what I'm about to say.

"I'm a virgin."

The confession lands like broken glass.

Zachary goes completely still, shock bleeding into something that looks like horror. Self-recrimination. The careful control I watched him drink away comes slamming back, and I can see him rebuilding walls in real-time.

"Jesus Christ, Violet." He runs both hands through his hair. "Why didn't you—"

"Because I wanted this." I'm talking too fast now, words tumbling over each other. "And I knew if I told you, you'd stop, and I just—"

"Of course I would stop." His voice is sharp with something that might be anger but sounds more like panic. "You're nineteen. You're a virgin. What the hell was I thinking?"

"You were thinking what I was thinking." I clutch the blanket tighter. "That we wanted each other."

"That's not—" He stops, closing his eyes. "That's not enough."

The rejection burns worse than I expect.

"I've lied about so much," I hear myself say, and I don't know why I'm still talking except that silence feels worse. "I even told Adison once, in the stable, that I'd slept with my dad's friend. I wanted to seem experienced. Sophisticated. Less young than I actually am."

The admission tastes like humiliation and relief in equal measure.

Zachary looks at me like I've just confirmed every fear he had about this being a terrible idea. Then, unexpectedly, he moves closer and pulls me against his chest, blanket and all.

"Violet." He kisses my forehead, gentle and devastating. "I'm taking you home."

"No." I try to pull back. "We don't have to—"

"Yes, we do." His arms tighten around me. "This isn't how this happens for you. Not like this. Not with me."

"Why not with you?" My voice breaks.

"Because you deserve better than a living room couch and a man who should know better." He keeps holding me, and the tenderness is somehow more devastating than the passion was. "Because your first time should be with someone you love. Someone your own age. Someone who—"

"I don't want someone my own age."

"I know." He pulls back to look at me, and there's something soft in his expression that makes my chest ache. "But I'm still taking you home."

He helps me dress, hands careful and almost clinical now, and I let him because fighting feels pointless. The detached distance is back, the careful control, all the things I managed to strip away for twenty perfect minutes.

We don't talk on the drive back to Adison's apartment. The silence is loaded with everything we didn't do, everything we can't have, and the crushing awareness that this was my one chance and I've somehow blown it by being exactly what I am.

Young. Inexperienced. Honest at the worst possible moment.

He walks me to the door like this is a normal date ending normally, and when he says goodnight his voice is so gentle it breaks something inside me.

"I'm sorry," I say, because someone should.

"Don't be." He touches my face once, briefly. "You have nothing to apologize for."

Then he's gone, and I'm standing in the hallway, still able to feel the ghost of his hands on my skin, still tasting him on my lips.

Still wanting him so badly it physically hurts.
