Pretend You Love Me

Chapter 28

Ch. 28 / 30 Mar 24, 2026

Harley’s POV

Tomorrow, everything changes.

The school hummed with preparation all day—banners unfurling across the auditorium, security personnel doing walkthroughs, faculty rehearsing schedules with the tight-lipped intensity.

The Governor's visit isn't about education, It's about performance. About donors seeing their investments polished and presented. About the machine running smoothly enough that no one notices the gears grinding underneath.

And somewhere in the middle of that machine, my name on a debate podium.

My one shot at proving that a scholarship girl from Southside can stand in front of Wentworth's elite and make them listen.

The weight of it presses against my ribs as I sit cross-legged on my bed, debate notes spread around me like a paper fortress. Every compromise, every humiliation, every calculated move I've made for three years funnels toward tomorrow.

One speech. One chance. Everything on the line.

A knock at the door.

I open it to find Tate leaning against the frame with studied nonchalance—hands in his pockets, one shoulder propped against the wood, looking exactly like a boy who was just passing through the neighborhood.

"What are you doing here, Mercer?"

"I was in the area. Thought I'd swing by, go over strategy for the debate." He says it without conviction, like he's testing whether the excuse will hold and already knows it won't. "And knowing you, you'll be up until three a.m. reorganizing your notes by emotional impact and font preference."

"You drove forty minutes through neighborhoods you're terrified of to review my debate strategy?"

"I'm a dedicated fake boyfriend. It's called commitment."

The excuses are tissue-thin, and neither of us examines them too closely.

My mother's on the night shift, the brothers are out, and the apartment is empty in a way it almost never is, and the silence feels deliberate.

I step aside and let him walk in.

We end up on my bed because there's nowhere else to sit—the couch is buried under Mom’s folded laundry, and the kitchen chairs are uncomfortable enough to qualify as punishment.

Tate kicks off his shoes and stretches out against the wall while I gather my scattered notes into something resembling order. "Your opening statement is too long."

He scans the page I hand him, eyebrows rising.

"You're trying to establish credibility and outline your platform and make an emotional appeal all in the first ninety seconds. Pick one. Hit them with the human angle first—the rest can follow."

"Since when are you a debate strategist?"

"Since I grew up watching my father manipulate rooms full of people for a living. I know how speeches work, Valdez. Lead with emotion, support with logic, close with a call to action. You're doing it backward."

The conversation drifts the way it always does between us—barbed, then honest, then quiet. The debate strategy dissolves into broader territory, the notes forgotten between us as the room darkens and the streetlight outside my window casts everything in amber.

"So." Tate's voice shifts into that register—the one that's casual on the surface and loaded underneath. "This thing between us. We should probably acknowledge what it is, since we're both adults allegedly capable of honest conversation."

"By all means. Enlighten me."

"It's physical, we're both aware of that. And if anything, I'm doing you a favor."

The smirk surfaces, predictable as sunrise.

"I’m helping you get to know yourself, your body, what you respond to—think of it as education. So that when you eventually meet someone real, you'll have a foundation to build on."

"Your generosity is truly inspiring. Someone should nominate you for a humanitarian award."

"I detect sarcasm, but the underlying gratitude is noted."

The banter carries its usual rhythm, but the heat underneath won't stay buried—not tonight, not with the apartment empty and the bed beneath us and the memory of every almost sitting in the air like a lit match near gasoline.

"So this is just physical," I say, and my voice drops without my permission. "Nothing more. We're clear on that."

"Crystal clear." He holds my gaze, and his eyes are anything but clear—dark blue, intent, carrying something neither of us has the courage to name. "Just two people with undeniable chemistry making a mutually beneficial arrangement slightly more... comprehensive."

"Comprehensive." I almost laugh. "Is that what we're calling it?"

"Would you prefer another term?"

"I'd prefer you stop talking." I close the distance between us in a slow collapse, finding his mouth with mine.

The kiss starts familiar—the rhythm we've established, the push and pull, the edge that defines us. But tonight there's no interruption waiting.

No brother's fist against the door, no audience, no reason to stop.

His hands slide beneath my shirt and pull it over my head in one fluid motion. My fingers find his hem and do the same, and when his bare chest presses against mine, the contact of skin on skin sends a shudder through both of us.

He lays me back against the mattress, his weight settling over me. His mouth traces down my neck, my collarbone, his tongue drawing a line between my breasts that makes my back arch off the sheets.

He unclasps my bra with a deftness that would annoy me if I weren't already past caring about anything except the sensation of his mouth closing over my nipple—wet heat and the deliberate pressure of his tongue that tears a sound from my throat.

My nervousness sits right beneath the want, a tremor in my fingers as they work his belt. This is new territory, everything beyond this point is uncharted, and the unfamiliarity should terrify me.

But it doesn’t, not with Tate.

He undresses me with a patience that's almost punishing, his mouth following the fabric, pressing hot kisses against my stomach, my hip bone, the inside of my thigh. By the time I'm bare beneath him, my breathing has gone ragged and my hands are fisted in the sheets.

"You good?" He asks.

"I'm good. Don't ask me again."

His mouth curves against my thigh. "Wouldn't dream of it."

He reaches for his jeans on the floor to pull a condom from the pocket, before I watch him roll it on, my pulse hammering so loud I'm certain he can hear it. And the sight of him—hard, ready, his body taut with restraint…

It sends a wave of heat through me so intense my thighs press together involuntarily.

Tate settles between my legs, and the first press of him against me, just the blunt heat of him at my entrance, makes my breath catch and hold.

His forehead drops to mine. His eyes find mine in the dim room, and for one suspended moment, the masks are gone as he pushes in slowly. The stretch is immediate—a sharp, burning pressure that makes me gasp and grip his shoulders hard enough to leave crescents in his skin.

He stops instantly, jaw clenched, every muscle in his body locked with the effort of holding still. "Don't stop." My voice is thin but certain. "Just… give me a second."

He gives me more than a second. He waits, his breath shaking against my temple, his thumb tracing circles on my hip that anchor me while my body adjusts to the intrusion.

The pain is there, but it doesn't define the moment. It exists alongside something else, something deeper: the fullness, the intimacy, the overwhelming awareness of him inside me.

When I shift my hips, tentatively, testing, the friction changes. The sharpness dulls into something warmer, something that pulses with possibility instead of pain.

"Move," I tell him, and he does.

Tate’s careful without being gentle, attentive without being tender. Each thrust is measured at first, controlled, watching my face for signals, adjusting his angle when my breath catches a certain way.

Then the rhythm finds itself when I wrap my legs around his waist and the angle deepens and the sound that escapes him, low, guttural, wrecked, emboldens me in ways words never could.

I roll my hips to meet his, and the friction hits something new, something that sends sparks scattering behind my eyes. My nails drag down his back. His teeth graze my shoulder.

The pace accelerates—still controlled, still attentive, but hungrier now, harder, the restraint eroding under the weight of how good this feels.

His hand slides between us, finding me with his thumb, and the added pressure combined with the depth of him inside me builds something at the base of my spine that I've only ever reached alone.

"There," I breathe, and he stays right there, that exact pressure, that exact angle, and the tension coils tighter and tighter until it snaps.

The orgasm breaks through me like a wave crashing over a seawall—my back arching, Tate’s name torn from my mouth in a sound I'll never be able to take back.

I clench around him and feel his rhythm stutter, his breathing fracture, his own release following seconds behind mine with a groan he buries against my neck.

We lie side by side, not quite touching, the sheets tangled around our legs. Tate stares at the ceiling. I pull the sheet over myself and pretend the silence is comfortable.

I pretend my heart isn't still hammering. Pretend I can't still feel the ghost of him everywhere. Pretend the enormity of what just happened hasn't fundamentally rearranged something inside me.
