THREE MONTHS LATER

GRADUATION DAY -

ZOE'S POV

I stood in front of my dorm room mirror, adjusting my graduation cap for the tenth time. The black gown felt strange and formal, but underneath it I was wearing the blue dress Leo had complimented me on months ago. Today felt like the perfect day to wear it again.

It's been three months.

Three long, wonderful, secret months of stolen glances during lessons, hidden text messages, and late-night phone calls when no one could hear us. But today, all of that would change.

Today, I would graduate. And today, Leo and I could finally be together openly.

My phone buzzed with a text from him: "Break a leg today, graduate. I'm so proud of you."

I smiled and typed back: "See you after the ceremony. We have some celebrating to do."

"Zoe!" Kai's voice called from the hallway. "Your chariot awaits!"

I grabbed my purse and headed out to find Kai waiting with his camera, looking handsome in a button-down shirt and tie.

"There she is," he said, snapping a photo. "The star of the day."

"Kai, you didn't have to come to my graduation."

"Are you kidding? I wouldn't miss this for the world. Besides, someone has to document this historic day."

We drove to campus and stopped at the main auditorium, where families and faculty were already gathering. The spring air was perfect, warm but not too hot, with a gentle breeze that made everything feel magical.

"So," Kai said as we walked, "are you nervous about your big day today?"

"Terrified," I admitted. "But also excited."

"Good for you. You deserve to be happy, Zoe. And Professor Mercer... well, he's not so bad once you get to know him."

I looked at Kai in surprise. "When did you get to know him?"

"Last week, when he tracked me down to thank me for helping you get that video taken down. We had coffee. He's actually pretty cool."

"You had coffee with Leo?"

"He wanted to make sure I knew how much your friendship means to you. And he wanted to thank me for being there for you when things got complicated."

My heart melted a little more. Even in our secret relationship, Leo had been thinking about the people who mattered to me.

We reached the auditorium, and I could see my classmates gathering in the staging area. Faculty members were lined up in their ceremonial robes, and I spotted Leo immediately. He looked distinguished and handsome in his academic regalia, and when our eyes met across the crowd, he smiled.

"Go get 'em, tiger," Kai said, giving me a hug. "I'll be in the audience cheering you on."

I joined my fellow graduates, and we filed into the auditorium. The ceremony was everything a graduation should be speeches about bright futures, the turning of tassels, the throwing of caps in the air.

When they called my name, I walked across the stage with my head held high. Dean Hendricks handed me my diploma, and I shook hands with the faculty members lined up on stage.

When I reached Leo, he extended his hand formally, but his eyes were shining with pride.

"Congratulations, Miss Washington," he said loud enough for everyone to hear.

"Thank you, Professor Mercer," I replied, trying not to grin too widely.

The ceremony ended, and families flooded onto the auditorium floor to find their graduates. I was looking around for Kai when I heard a familiar voice.

"Congratulations, sweetheart."

I turned to see Marcus walking toward me, looking genuinely happy for the first time in months.

"Uncle Marcus!" I hugged him tightly.

“I'm proud of you, Zoe. Really proud."

Over the past three months, Marcus had slowly been rebuilding our relationship. It started with his apology at Leo's apartment, where he'd admitted to arranging for the video to be taken and begged for forgiveness. It had taken time, but we'd worked through our issues in family therapy.

"Where is he?" Marcus asked, looking around.

"Where's who?"

"Leo. I want to congratulate him too."

I spotted Leo near the stage, talking to other faculty members. "Over there."

We walked over together, and Marcus extended his hand to Leo.

"Congratulations, Professor," Marcus said. "You did an excellent job with my niece."

"She did all the hard work," Leo replied, shaking Marcus's hand. "I just tried to keep up."

"Well, whatever you did, it worked. Second place in the West Coast Competition is no small achievement."

"Actually," I said, "I have some news about that."

Both men looked at me expectantly.

"Eric—the music producer we met in LA—he called yesterday. He wants to offer me a recording contract."

"What?" Leo's eyes went wide. "Zoe, that's incredible!"

"It's a small label, but they specialize in classical-jazz fusion. They want me to record an album of my original compositions."

Marcus whistled. "That's a real opportunity, sweetheart."

"I know. And I have Leo to thank for it. If he hadn't pushed me to perfect my technique and incorporate classical structure into my jazz pieces, none of this would have happened."

Leo looked embarrassed by the praise. "You would have succeeded with or without me."

"Maybe. But not like this. Not as the musician I've become."

Kai appeared at my elbow with his camera. "Sorry to interrupt, but I need some graduation photos. Zoe, can you pose with your family?"

"Family?" I looked at Marcus and Leo. "All of us together?"

"All of us," Marcus confirmed.

We posed for several photos, and then Kai said, "Now how about just the happy couple?"

I felt my cheeks burn. "Kai—"

"What? Everyone knows you two are together now. It's not a secret anymore."

Leo looked at me questioningly. "Is that okay with you? Being public about us?"

"More than okay."

He wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me close. "In that case, Miss Washington, would you like to have dinner with me tonight? Somewhere public, where everyone can see us together?"

"I would love that, Professor Mercer."

"Actually," he said, his voice getting more serious, "there's something I want to say to you."

My heart raced. “What?”

Instead of saying what it was, he leaned in and kissed me. I could hear Kai's camera clicking away, capturing every moment.

When we finally broke apart, Leo whispered in my ear, "What I want to say to you is that I love you, Zoe."

I almost broke down into tears at the announcement.

"I love you too, Leo. Forever."

And the camera clicked again, capturing the look of love on our faces.

THE END.
