The invitation was impossible to miss.
A glossy, gold-embossed flyer had been slipped into Emma’s locker that morning. The words “Victoria Sterling’s Pool Party Extravaganza” were printed in obnoxiously large letters, followed by the address and time. Emma stared at it, her stomach twisting.
“What’s that?” Liam’s voice startled her. He leaned against the lockers, his dark eyes scanning the flyer in her hand.
“Victoria’s latest stunt,” Emma said flatly.
“Are you actually considering going?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
Emma shoved the flyer into her bag. “I don’t have much of a choice, do I? Everyone’s already talking about it. If I don’t go, she wins.”
Liam let out a sharp laugh. “Emma, she’s already planning to win. You think this is just a pool party? She has something up her sleeve, trust me.”
Emma narrowed her eyes. “And how do you know that?”
Liam hesitated for a second, then shrugged. “Because it’s Victoria. That’s what she does.”
“Yeah, well,” Emma said, trying to sound braver than she felt, “maybe I’m tired of letting her call the shots. If she thinks I’m too scared to show up, she’s wrong.”
Liam leaned in slightly, his voice dropping. “Just… be careful. She’s not as harmless as she looks.”
Emma rolled her eyes, pretending not to care, but her heart raced as she walked away.
By the time Emma arrived at Victoria’s mansion, the party was in full swing. The air was heavy with music, laughter, and the chlorine smell wafting from the massive pool in the backyard. Lights strung across the yard cast a soft glow over the scene, making everything feel surreal.
Katie was already there, waving Emma over from the patio. “You made it!”
Emma forced a smile. “Yeah. Let’s get this over with.”
She followed Katie through the crowd, her nerves tightening with every step. People stared as she walked by, whispering and laughing, but she kept her chin up.
When they reached the pool area, Victoria was waiting, perched on a lounge chair like a queen holding court. She smiled as Emma approached, her eyes gleaming with mischief.
“Well, well,” Victoria said, standing up. “Look who decided to join the fun.”
“I’m here,” Emma said, crossing her arms. “What do you want?”
Victoria’s smile widened. “Oh, don’t be so defensive. This is a party, after all. But since you’re here…” She turned to the crowd, raising her voice. “I think it’s time for the next dare on Emma’s little list.”
The crowd erupted into cheers and laughter.
Emma’s stomach dropped. “Victoria, don’t—”
“Oh, come on,” Victoria interrupted, her tone dripping with fake sweetness. “It’s harmless. All you have to do is skinny-dip in the pool. Easy, right?”
The crowd roared louder, their chants growing: “Do it! Do it!”
Emma felt frozen, her heart pounding in her chest. She wanted to scream, to run, but her feet wouldn’t move.
Katie leaned close, her voice low. “You don’t have to do this, Emma. Just walk away.”
Emma glared at her, frustration bubbling up. “If I walk away, they’ll never let me live it down.”
Before she could say another word, someone shoved her from behind. She stumbled forward, losing her balance and tumbling straight into the pool.
The cold water hit her like a slap. She surfaced with a gasp, her hair plastered to her face. Laughter exploded around her, and it took her a moment to realize why.
Her white blouse clung to her skin, completely see-through. Her underwear was visible beneath her soaked jeans.
Humiliation burned through her as she swam to the edge of the pool. She climbed out, dripping and shivering, her cheeks flaming as the crowd erupted in cheers and wolf whistles.
“Bravo!” Victoria called, clapping mockingly. “Look at her, everyone. So desperate for attention, she couldn’t even wait for a dare to be official.”
Emma clenched her fists, tears stinging her eyes. “You pushed me!”
Victoria smirked. “Did I? Or were you just too eager to jump in and prove yourself?”
The laughter grew louder, and Emma felt like the ground was caving beneath her.
“That’s enough,” a deep voice cut through the chaos.
Emma turned to see Liam standing a few feet away, his expression dark. The crowd fell silent as he walked forward, glaring at Victoria.
“Seriously, Victoria?” Liam said, his tone icy. “Is this how you get your kicks? Humiliating people who’ve done nothing to you?”
Victoria’s smile faltered for a moment before she regained her composure. “Oh, please. Don’t act like you’re some hero, Liam. You’re enjoying this as much as anyone.”
“Actually, I’m not,” he snapped. He turned to Emma, his voice softer. “Let’s get out of here.”
Emma hesitated, her humiliation keeping her rooted in place. But then Victoria spoke again, loud enough for everyone to hear.
“This is only the beginning, Emma. You have no idea what’s coming next.”
Emma didn’t say a word on the way home. Her clothes were still damp, and her hands shook as she clutched her bag. Liam had offered to drive her, but the silence between them was unbearable.
When she finally got home, she dropped her bag by the door and headed straight for her room. But as she pulled out her notebook, something fell out.
A folded piece of paper.
Her heart skipped as she opened it. The words scrawled inside made her stomach twist.
“You’re not the only one with secrets. We’re just getting started.”
Emma’s breath caught. Someone was watching her.
