James Morrison’s birthday celebration was in full swing, a spectacle of wealth and influence carefully curated to showcase his power.

Brian stood near the edge of the room, his gaze sweeping over the crowd. His well-groomed beard and glasses served as his shield, but tonight, he felt exposed. The tension between him and Madelyn was palpable, a crackling energy that neither could ignore.

Madelyn stood a few feet away, dressed in an elegant black gown that accentuated her sharp features. She sipped her champagne, her eyes flicking to Brian now and then, her thoughts unreadable. The weight of their secrets pressed between them like a physical barrier.

“Are you ready for this?” Brian murmured as he stepped closer.

Madelyn didn’t meet his gaze. “I don’t think anyone’s ready for this.”

As the evening wore on, the crowd thickened, and Morrison made his grand entrance. He swept into the room like a king, his charisma pulling every gaze to him. Madelyn moved to greet him, her face lighting up with a smile that made Brian’s chest tighten.

“Uncle James,” she said warmly, embracing him.

Morrison chuckled, patting her back. “Maddie! You look stunning, as always.”

Brian’s jaw clenched as he watched them, his fists tightening at his sides. Every fiber of his being screamed at him to act, to end it now, but he couldn’t.

Not yet.

He needed the right moment.

The night spiraled toward chaos when Nathan stumbled into the room, reeking of alcohol. His disheveled suit and glassy eyes were a stark contrast to the polished elegance around him. Heads turned, and a murmur rippled through the crowd.

“Nathan,” Madelyn hissed, moving toward him. “What are you doing here?”

Nathan ignored her, his bloodshot eyes fixed on Brian. “There he is,” he slurred, pointing a shaky finger. “The man of the hour.”

Brian tensed, his muscles coiling like a spring. “You’re drunk. Go home.”

Nathan laughed bitterly. “Home? You’re one to talk about homes, huh? Homeless Greg. Or should I say... Brian Marshall?”

The room fell silent. The name hung in the air like a gunshot, turning heads and drawing every eye to Brian.

Madelyn froze, her champagne flute slipping from her hand and shattering on the floor.

“What?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Brian’s heart pounded as he searched for words, but before he could speak, Morrison set his wine glass down with deliberate precision. The sound was quiet but carried weight, a signal that drew all attention to him.

“Of course he’s Brian Marshall,” Morrison said calmly, his voice like silk laced with poison. “Did you really think I wouldn’t recognize the man whose wife we had to eliminate?”

The words sent a shockwave through the room. Madelyn staggered back as if struck, her hand clutching the edge of a nearby chair.

“What are you talking about?” she demanded, her voice trembling. “Uncle James, what is he talking about?”

Morrison turned to her, his expression almost pitying.

“Oh, Madelyn. You’ve always been too trusting. Your husband isn’t who he says he is. He’s here to destroy me.”

Her gaze darted to Brian, her eyes wide with confusion and betrayal. “Is that true?”

Brian opened his mouth, but the truth came rushing out before he could stop it.

“Yes.”
