Love by the Contract

Chapter 192

Ch. 192 / 200 Apr 25, 2026

The reality of the situation hit her like a wave. Lives were on the line, and every decision carried weighty consequences.

Emma immediately called a contact at the United Nations, hoping to secure assistance in safeguarding their assets and evacuating staff if necessary. The conversation was brief but promising. Support would be sent, but it might take days.

By midnight, Emma was back in her office, drafting contingency plans and reviewing crisis protocols. Thomas appeared in the doorway, concern etched on his face.

“You need rest, Emma,” he said gently.

“I can’t stop now,” she replied, her voice tinged with exhaustion. “Too much is at stake.”

Thomas walked over, placing his hands on her shoulders. “You’re doing everything you can. Trust your team to handle the rest.”

She nodded reluctantly, knowing he was right. But as she prepared to head home, a new email notification flashed on her screen.

The subject line sent a chill down her spine: Urgent: Escalation in Target Region.

Emma clicked it open, her breath catching as she read the contents. The situation had deteriorated further. Armed groups had taken control of the area around the warehouse, and their staff was being evacuated under emergency protocols.

Her heart pounded as she read the final line:

We cannot guarantee the safety of your supplies or personnel at this time.

Emma closed her eyes, grappling with the enormity of the crisis. The initiative she had poured so much into was teetering on the brink of collapse, and the lives of her team were in immediate danger.

When she finally opened her eyes, they were steely with determination. Whatever it took, she would not let this be the end of Health Horizons.

The atmosphere in the foundation's command center was tense, punctuated only by the hurried clicks of keyboards and the low hum of urgent voices on phone lines. Emma Hamilton stood at the center of it all, her arms crossed and her eyes fixed on the live updates streaming in from the affected region. Maps, logistics reports, and evacuation protocols littered the table in front of her. Every decision she made could mean the difference between safety and catastrophe.

“We’ve successfully evacuated the majority of our field staff,” Raj said, his voice steady but laced with fatigue. He tapped the tablet in his hands, pulling up the most recent updates. “But the remaining team in the northern district is pinned down. The roads are blockaded, and the nearest evacuation point is overrun.”

Emma’s jaw tightened. “What about the supplies at the warehouse?”

Raj hesitated before replying. “We’ve lost access to the site. Armed groups have taken control of the surrounding area. Local authorities aren’t equipped to intervene.”

Emma’s shoulders slumped briefly, but she quickly straightened, her determination hardening. “Lives come first. Supplies can be replaced.”

She turned to the team. “Focus on securing the safety of every single person on the ground. Reach out to our contacts at the UN, Red Cross, anyone who can provide immediate assistance. Time is not on our side.”

Over the next few hours, the room buzzed with activity. Calls were made to international agencies, security firms, and local allies. The coordinated effort began yielding results—most of the foundation's staff in the region were accounted for and evacuated to a secure zone.

Yet, amid the small victories, a new complication arose.

“Emma,” Raj called, his tone grave. “I just received word that Dr. Khalid hasn’t checked in.”

Emma froze. Dr. Khalid was one of their most trusted local partners, an experienced physician who had been instrumental in organizing the community outreach programs. His deep connections with the region made him irreplaceable.

“When was he last seen?” Emma demanded, striding toward Raj.

“Yesterday afternoon. He was at a village clinic when the situation began escalating. His team evacuated, but he stayed behind to help move patients. No one has heard from him since.”

Emma’s heart sank. The thought of losing someone as dedicated as Khalid was unbearable. “We need to find him,” she said firmly. “Start contacting anyone who might know his location. Send out feelers to the local networks. If he’s still there, we’ll bring him back.”
