Love by the Contract

Chapter 154

Ch. 154 / 200 Apr 25, 2026

The morning sun pierced through the blinds of Emma Hamilton’s office as she sat at her desk, a knot tightening in her stomach. The leaked data had made headlines across several media outlets, and though the reports twisted the truth, their reach was undeniable. The foundation's reputation was now on the line.

Emma’s phone buzzed incessantly, her inbox overflowing with messages from donors, partners, and concerned staff. She rubbed her temples, forcing herself to focus on the task at hand. Every second wasted was a second closer to losing the trust they had worked so hard to build.

Thomas entered the room, carrying a tray of coffee. Despite his own recovery being far from complete, his presence was steady.

“How bad is it?” he asked, placing the tray on her desk.

Emma glanced up, exhaustion etched on her face.

“Bad. Some of our biggest donors are reconsidering their commitments, and the media isn’t helping. They’re framing us as incompetent at best and unethical at worst.”

Thomas pulled up a chair, his brow furrowed.

“We need to hit this head-on. Transparency is our strongest weapon.”

Emma nodded. “I’ve already drafted a statement, but we need more than words. We have to show action.”

She picked up her phone and dialed Marcus. When he answered, she got straight to the point.

“I need you to contact every major donor personally. Reassure them that we’re handling this and that their contributions are secure. Schedule calls with anyone who has questions.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Marcus replied. “What about the media?”

“I’ll handle the press conference,” Emma said. “Have PR prepare a list of talking points. We’re taking full accountability for the breach, but we’ll also make it clear that the stolen data has been manipulated.”

As she hung up, Thomas reached for her hand. “You don’t have to do this alone.”

Emma gave him a faint smile. “I know. But this is my responsibility.”

The press conference was held later that afternoon in the foundation's main conference room, which had been hastily converted into a media center. Cameras flashed as Emma took the podium, her expression calm but resolute.

“Good afternoon,” she began. “As many of you are aware, our foundation recently suffered a serious data breach. Sensitive information was stolen, and some of it has been leaked to the public. I want to start by taking full responsibility for the breach. We owe it to our supporters and beneficiaries to do better, and we will.”

She paused, her gaze sweeping the room. “However, I want to be clear: the information being circulated has been manipulated to misrepresent our work. The accusations against us are baseless, and we will prove this. In the meantime, we are taking immediate steps to strengthen our security and ensure that this never happens again.”

Questions erupted as soon as she finished speaking. Emma answered each one with composure, emphasizing the foundation’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

By the time the press conference ended, the tone in the room had shifted slightly. The reporters were still skeptical, but Emma had planted a seed of doubt in their minds about the legitimacy of the allegations.

Back in her office, Emma convened an emergency meeting with her senior staff. Marcus provided an update on the investigation into the leak, while the PR team outlined their strategy for countering the negative press.

“We’ve started reaching out to the families and communities we serve,” Marcus said. “They’ve been incredibly supportive. Many of them are willing to speak to the media about the impact of our work.”

“That’s good,” Emma replied. “We’ll need their voices to counter the narrative being pushed by our rivals. Make sure they’re prepared for interviews and that they have our full support.”

One of the PR specialists chimed in. “We’ve also received offers of support from several other nonprofits. They want to issue a joint statement condemning the attack on our foundation.”

Emma nodded. “Let’s coordinate with them. Unity will send a strong message.”

As the meeting wrapped up, Emma’s phone buzzed with an incoming call from her lawyer. “Excuse me,” she said, stepping out into the hallway to take the call.

“Emma,” the lawyer began, his tone grim. “We just received notice of a lawsuit.”

Emma’s heart sank. “What kind of lawsuit?”

“A competitor is accusing the foundation of unethical practices,” he explained. “They’re claiming that the stolen data proves we misused donor funds and violated research ethics.”

Emma felt a wave of disbelief. “That’s absurd. None of it is true.”

“I know,” the lawyer said. “But they’re using the leaked data to back up their claims. It’s a strategic move—they’re trying to undermine your credibility while you’re already vulnerable.”

Emma clenched her jaw. “How strong is their case?”

“Legally, it’s weak,” he replied. “But public perception is another story. They’re banking on the court of public opinion to do the damage.”

Emma closed her eyes, her mind racing. “What’s our next step?”

“I’ll file a response denying the allegations,” the lawyer said. “In the meantime, you’ll need to continue building public support. The more people who believe in your mission, the harder it will be for this lawsuit to stick.”

“Understood,” Emma said. “Thank you.”

As she hung up, Thomas approached her, concern etched on his face. “What’s wrong?”

“They’re suing us,” Emma said, her voice barely above a whisper. “They’re using the stolen data to accuse us of unethical practices.”

Thomas’s expression darkened. “They’re kicking you while you’re down.”

Emma nodded, a steely resolve hardening in her gaze. “Let them. They have no idea who they’re up against.”

The following days were a whirlwind of activity. Emma worked tirelessly to mitigate the fallout, meeting with donors, rallying her staff, and coordinating with legal and PR teams.

The crowdfunding campaign, which had been a beacon of hope, now became a rallying cry for supporters to stand with the foundation against the baseless attacks.

Thomas, despite his ongoing recovery, remained by her side, offering both practical and emotional support. Late one night, as they reviewed documents in her office, he reached for her hand.

“You’ve been incredible through all of this,” he said. “Don’t let them make you doubt yourself.”

Emma looked at him, her eyes shining with determination. “I won’t. This foundation means too much to too many people. I won’t let anyone tear it down.”

Just as Emma started to feel like they were regaining control, Marcus burst into her office, his face pale.

“What is it?” Emma asked, bracing herself for more bad news.

“We’ve received another anonymous tip,” Marcus said, handing her a piece of paper. “It’s about the lawsuit.”

Emma read the note, her pulse quickening. It claimed that the competitor suing them had fabricated the allegations using doctored versions of the stolen data. If true, it could completely discredit their case—but proving it would be another matter entirely.
