Raf’s POV
The encryption layers peel like skin off an onion — if the onion was designed by a paranoid genius who understood cryptographic architecture the way concert pianists understand Chopin. Each layer reveals the next, and each next layer is more elegant than the last.
The specific kind of infuriating that happens when you're trying to break something built by someone smarter than you, and the evidence of their intelligence is the thing preventing you from saving your best friend.
I've been in this chair for six hours. Sophia is upstairs in the car, on the phone with federal contacts, building the legal scaffolding that turns whatever I do down here into something admissible instead of something criminal. The division of labor makes sense. The loneliness doesn't.
The basement hums. Server racks on three walls, cooling fans cycling, the biometric telemetry screen still scrolling heartbeats from forty thousand people in hospitals across the world.
I stopped looking at the individual feeds around hour two. One of those feeds is Danny's, and watching my best friend's heart rate spike while I'm failing to crack the code that frees him is the kind of multitasking that makes your hands shake too badly to type.
Layer seven. The master release function is visible now — I can see it in the directory structure, the single switch that unlocks every headset simultaneously. It sits behind one final security protocol, and the protocol is the most beautiful piece of code I've ever hated.
A dead man's switch. Fail-safe, triggered by unauthorized access to the release function. If someone brute-forces the lock, the switch activates and wipes all player data.
Given that the neural lock is the only thing keeping the headsets from becoming paperweights attached to human skulls, wiping the data kills every player still connected.
Forty thousand people, flatlined simultaneously, because someone tried to save them without understanding the system well enough.
"You built a bomb under the exit door," I mutter to the empty room. "That's genuinely unhinged."
The dead man's switch has to be disarmed before the release can activate. Which means I have to understand M.K.'s code well enough to think like him — to trace the logic of a man who loved someone enough to build a death game when she died and hated the world enough to booby-trap the escape route.
I try the first approach — standard cryptographic bypass, isolate the trigger conditions, deactivate sequentially. The code rejects it, not violently but elegantly, the way a lock rejects a key that's almost right. Forty minutes wasted.
Second approach. I study M.K.'s coding patterns — variable naming, function architecture, the way he nests conditional statements. Every programmer has a fingerprint, and M.K.'s is meticulous and recursive. Loops within loops, the digital equivalent of a man who can't stop circling the same thought.
The code rejects it again. Closer — the switch flickers, the trigger conditions waver, but the failsafe holds. Almost-right and right are the difference between forty thousand people waking up and forty thousand people dying.
My hands are shaking. I press them flat against the desk — Danny's gesture, borrowed from a man who grounds himself against solid surfaces when the world stops making sense.
Third approach. I stop trying to outsmart the switch and start trying to understand the man who built it. The LENA folder sits in the directory beside the TIER DESIGN folder — personal files, not game code.
I open it and find messages with photographs. The digital architecture of a love story, timestamped and dated, ending abruptly eighteen months ago. The last message M.K. sent to Lena: "I'll fix this. I promise."
I stare at it. Then I look at the dead man's switch code, and I see it — the deactivation isn't a cryptographic puzzle. It's a promise.
The switch disarms when the release function is activated with a specific input string, and the string is in the LENA folder. A phrase, personal, the kind of thing only someone who knew the relationship would think to try.
I type the string. My fingers are steady for the first time in six hours because the answer was never in the code. It was in the love letters. The switch disarms. The trigger conditions collapse. The release function unlocks, and I activate it.
The biometric telemetry screen goes dark. Not all at once — in a cascade, heartbeat feeds flatlining and reconnecting as the neural locks disengage across twelve time zones.
Ninety seconds. Each flatline-to-reconnect is a person waking up, a family collapsing with relief, a nurse calling a code that turns into an all-clear. The screen goes fully dark. The servers hum into standby.
I’ve done it.
I sit in the Architect's chair and my hands are shaking again but differently — not from fear but from the aftermath of a body that's been running on adrenaline for six hours and just lost its reason. I pull out my phone. Margaret's number. It rings twice.
"Raf?" Her voice is thick, the texture of a woman who's been crying or is about to start.
"Are they awake?" My voice cracks. First time in weeks. The sound surprises me and I press my free hand flat against the desk because Danny's gesture works even when Danny is four miles away waking up in a hospital bed.
"Yes." Margaret is crying now, the words coming through wet and broken. "She's awake. Elena says Danny's awake too. Come here, Raf. Come here."
"I need to go to Sophia first." The words cost me — every part of my body wants to be in that hospital room. "The case — I need to secure the evidence before anyone else accesses this lab."
"Raf—"
"I know. I'll be there. Just — tell them I'm coming."
I hang up. The phone sits in my hand and the basement is dark and the servers are quiet. Somewhere in a hospital my best friend is breathing real air for the first time in weeks because a love letter unlocked the door that a genius built to keep the world out.
I close the laptop. Photograph the dead man's switch code, the LENA folder, the deactivation string. Then I stand up from the Architect's chair and walk out into a night that smells like rain and exhaust and the specific absence of ozone that means the real world doesn't need cooling fans.
Sophia is in the car, phone pressed to her ear. The look she gives me when I open the passenger door is the look of a woman who can read the answer on a man's face before he opens his mouth.
"It's done," I say. "They're out."
