I've been reading liars for thirty years, and Dr. Vivian Cross is one of the better ones I've seen.

She sits at the witness table with the composed authority of a woman who has testified before — congressional hearings, grant reviews, tenure committees.

Her hands rest flat on the table. Her posture is upright without being rigid. Her voice carries the measured clarity of someone who has rehearsed not the answers but the cadence, because cadence is what juries and senators respond to. You can say almost anything if you say it at the right speed.

The gallery is full — fewer reporters than the first hearing, more staffers. The political temperature has shifted since Maren's vigils. Senators who stalled the first round are sitting straighter, performing the urgency their voicemails demanded.

"Dr. Cross, you were the lead researcher on biometric feedback systems at the Neural Interface Lab from 2014 to 2019. Is that correct?"

"That's correct, Senator."

"And the neural lock currently holding approximately thirty-nine thousand people inside the Echo platform — in your expert opinion, is it derived from the research conducted at your lab?"

Cross doesn't hesitate on this one. "The architecture shares foundational principles with our published research, yes. The biometric feedback loop — the mechanism that reads emotional states and translates them into system responses — is consistent with work we developed during that period."

"Consistent with, or directly built from?"

"The distinction matters. Our research was published. Anyone with graduate-level expertise in neural interfaces could have used our published findings as a foundation. That doesn't mean someone from our lab built it."

Good answer. Rehearsed, precise, the specific kind of truthful that leaves the important part unsaid. She's not lying about the published research.

She's using the publication as a shield — if the work was public, anyone could have built on it, which means the builder could be anyone, which means the question of who is unanswerable from where she's sitting.

Except I've watched Arthur Wilson deploy the same technique for twenty-two years. The truthful statement that functions as a redirect.

The answer that satisfies the question's surface while burying its intent. Cross isn't lying. She's architecting.

Senator Davis leans forward. "Dr. Cross, during your tenure at the Neural Interface Lab, did you mentor graduate students who specialized in biometric feedback applications?"

"I mentored several students across various specializations."

"Specifically in the area of neural lock technology — the mechanism that prevents users from disconnecting from a virtual environment. Did any of your students work in that area?"

One second. The hesitation is a single second — less than a breath, less than a blink to anyone not looking for it.

But I've spent thirty years calibrating my instruments against men who hesitate for exactly one second before deploying the sentence they prepared, and Dr. Vivian Cross just hesitated.

Her eyes move left. Not far — a flicker, the involuntary glance of a person whose brain just accessed a memory they didn't intend to access in public.

The leftward glance. The same tell Catherine Liang showed at the first hearing when the megaphone asked about code audits — the neural pathway between a question and a truth the speaker has decided not to share, visible in the eyes for exactly the length of time it takes the conscious mind to override the unconscious one.

"Neural lock technology wasn't a formal area of study at our lab," Cross says. Smooth and recovered.

The cadence restored. "Our work focused on biometric feedback systems broadly. The lock mechanism — the prevention of disconnection — would be an application of that research, but it wasn't something we specifically pursued."

The answer is true and useless. She didn't pursue the lock mechanism. That doesn't mean a student didn't. The sentence is a door she closed with one hand while pointing away from it with the other.

"To clarify," Senator Davis presses, "are you aware of any former students from your lab who may have had the expertise to develop the neural lock currently in use?"

Two seconds this time. The hesitation is longer because the question is more direct and the deflection requires more construction.

"I'm not in a position to speculate about the current capabilities of former students. Many of them have gone on to distinguished careers in various fields. I wouldn't want to cast suspicion on anyone's work without evidence."

The sentence is a fortress. Noble, principled, the answer of a mentor protecting reputations. And inside the fortress is the name she's not saying.

I know the shape of a protected name. I've watched men protect names in boardrooms and depositions — a hesitation, a redirect, a principled reason for the redirect that makes not-saying look like ethics.

Cross is protecting someone. Could be a student. Someone whose name she won't say because saying it would connect a person to a catastrophe.

The hearing continues. I watch for an hour. Cross doesn't hesitate again — the defenses are up, the fortress sealed, every subsequent answer delivered with the polished precision of a woman who identified her vulnerability and reinforced it.

But the one-second hesitation and the leftward glance are already mine. Filed. Catalogued. The instruments don't lie.

I find Raf in the hallway outside the hearing room. He's leaning against a wall with his laptop open on a bench beside him, the posture of a man who has been running on caffeine and obsession for twenty-six days and has stopped distinguishing between the two.

"Cross has a student," I say.

He looks up. The flat eyes — the ones Maren mentioned, the ones that mean he's too deep in the data to surface without a reason. I'm giving him a reason.

"Someone she mentored in neural interface research. The student's work is connected to the lock — she knows it, Rafael. I watched her decide not to say the name in real time. One second of hesitation and a leftward glance when they asked about students who worked on lock technology."

"She denied it."

"She denied that neural lock technology was a formal area of study. She didn't deny that a student could have applied her published research to build one. The denial was aimed at the institution, not the individual." I sit beside him on the bench. "She's protecting someone specific. Not a program, not a department but a person."

Raf's flat eyes sharpen. The data-brain engaging, the obsession finding a new track. "Cross's lab published twelve papers between 2014 and 2019. I've read all of them. Three had co-authors I couldn't fully identify — listed by initials only, consistent with graduate students working under supervision."

"Initials."

"Standard academic practice for student co-authors who haven't completed their degrees. But the work in those three papers — the biometric feedback architecture, the emotional-state translation algorithms — that's the foundation the neural lock is built on."

"Then the student who co-authored those papers is the student Cross is protecting."

Raf closes his laptop. The motion is slow, deliberate — the gesture of a man who has been looking at a screen for twenty-six days and has just been told the answer might be in a filing cabinet instead.

"If Cross mentored the person who built this," he says, "the enrollment records will have a name."

"Then find it."
