Intimate Education for a Noble Lady

Chapter 13

Ch. 13 / 30 Apr 25, 2026

Several evenings had passed since the horse races, each one bringing me to Theodora's chambers with increasingly less pretense of reluctance.

The familiar candlelight greeted me as I slipped through her door, though the atmosphere tonight carried a charge I detected immediately—something electric and expectant that made my skin prickle with anticipation.

Theodora reclined upon her chaise with the studied elegance of a Renaissance painting, though her expression held none of art's serene detachment.

Her eyes tracked my movement across the chamber with predatory focus that sent warmth pooling low in my stomach.

"You arrived rather more promptly this evening," she observed, her voice carrying that particular honeyed quality that preceded trouble. "Even the most obtuse observer could suspect eagerness has replaced reluctant curiosity."

"Perhaps I've simply grown weary of pretending otherwise." The boldness of my own response surprised me, though I found I rather enjoyed Theodora's appreciative smile.

"How delightfully honest. I confess, theoretical discussions about desire have begun to feel rather insufficient given the circumstances."

She rose with fluid grace, moving toward me with deliberate slowness.

"Tell me, what have you learned from our previous conversations? Beyond vocabulary and vague concepts, what do you actually understand about intimacy?"

"I understand that my governess was either woefully ignorant or deliberately misleading," I replied, my pulse quickening as she drew closer. "I understand that my body possesses capacities I never suspected. And I understand that such knowledge proves rather difficult to forget once acquired."

"Excellent observations."

Theodora stopped mere inches from where I stood, close enough that I could feel warmth radiating from her skin.

"Though understanding and experience remain distinctly different territories. One might comprehend the mechanics of swimming while drowning spectacularly upon first entering water."

"Are you suggesting I require practical instruction?"

"I am suggesting that kissing, for instance, involves considerably more nuance than mere pressing of lips together."

Her fingers rose to trace my jaw with featherlight precision.

"Technique matters. Timing matters. The ability to communicate desire through touch alone—this requires practice that no amount of discussion can provide."

My breath caught as her thumb brushed across my lower lip. "And you propose to provide such practice?"

"Unless you object?"

Her eyebrow arched with familiar challenge.

"We might continue our purely theoretical approach indefinitely, discussing sensation without ever experiencing it properly. Though I suspect such restraint would prove rather... frustrating for us both."

"I do not object," I whispered.

Theodora's smile sharpened with satisfaction before she leaned forward, her lips brushing mine with devastating gentleness. The contact lasted barely a moment—instruction rather than indulgence.

"Kissing begins with an invitation," she murmured against my mouth. "Soft pressure, testing response. One does not simply devour—that comes later, when mutual enthusiasm has been established."

She kissed me again, and this time the contact lingered—her hand sliding to cup the back of my neck with possessive warmth while her lips moved against mine with deliberate intention.

I found myself leaning into her, my body seeking more of what she offered before my mind could formulate objection.

The third kiss obliterated instruction entirely.

Theodora's mouth claimed mine with hunger that stole breath from my lungs, her fingers threading through my hair to angle my head precisely where she wanted it. When her tongue traced the seam of my lips, I opened for her without conscious decision—pure instinct overriding twenty-three years of careful conditioning.

The sensation of her tongue sliding against mine sent lightning cascading through my entire being. Heat pooled low in my stomach, spreading outward in waves that made my limbs feel simultaneously weightless and impossibly heavy.

I heard myself make a sound, something between gasp and moan, that would have mortified me utterly had I possessed any remaining capacity for shame.

She tasted of wine and something essentially her own, and I found myself chasing that flavor with desperate enthusiasm I hadn't known I possessed.

My hands, previously frozen at my sides, rose of their own accord to grip her shoulders, pulling her closer as though proximity alone might satisfy the ache building within me.

Theodora responded by pressing me backward against the chaise's arm, her body covering mine with delicious weight.

The contact—breasts against breasts, hips against hips, the tantalizing friction of silk and skin—wrung another involuntary sound from my throat. Every point where our bodies touched seemed to burn with exquisite intensity.

Her teeth grazed my lower lip, a gentle scrape that sent shivers radiating down my spine to settle in places I had been taught never to acknowledge.

Theodora’s fingers traced patterns along my collarbone, dipping beneath fabric edges with deliberate provocation. I shivered despite the chamber's warmth. "Tell me what you feel when I touch you here."

"Heat," I whispered. "And something like hunger, though not for food."

"Desire. Your body recognizes what it wants even when your mind struggles to name it.”

Theodora supplied, her voice dropping to intimate registers.

“The sensations you're experiencing—the warmth spreading through your limbs, the tightening in your stomach, the particular ache building in places propriety forbids acknowledging—all of this represents a natural response to stimulation."

"Natural," I repeated, grasping at the word like salvation. "Not a moral deficiency."

"Decidedly not. Your governess told convenient lies designed to ensure your compliance and ignorance."

She guided me backward toward the chaise, settling us both upon its velvet surface in configuration that placed her partially above me.

"The truth is considerably more interesting—women's bodies are capable of extraordinary pleasure, perhaps even more varied and intense than men's, though society prefers we remain unaware of such possibilities."

Her mouth found mine again, and this time there was nothing instructional about the kiss. Raw hunger replaced careful demonstration as she pressed against me with obvious want, her hands discovering territories that made me gasp against her lips.

"You may touch me as well," Theodora murmured when we paused for breath. "Education proceeds more effectively when both parties participate actively."

Permission granted, my hands—trembling slightly with nervous excitement—began their own exploration. The silk of her robe slid beneath my fingers like water, revealing warm skin that seemed to welcome my tentative caresses.

Theodora's sharp intake of breath when I traced her collarbone emboldened further experimentation.

"Yes," she encouraged, her voice rough with desire. "Trust your instincts. Your body understands pleasure even if your mind hasn't yet caught up."

What followed blurred into sensation and discovery, guilt about Nicholas flickering distantly while more immediate experiences demanded attention.

Theodora guided my hands to places I had never imagined touching on another person, her whispered instructions transforming nervous uncertainty into hungry curiosity.

Each revelation stripped away another layer of shame, replacing fear with fierce wanting that threatened to consume propriety entirely.

"You're trembling," Theodora observed during a moment when we lay tangled together, both breathing heavily.

"I cannot seem to stop." My voice emerged shakier than intended. "Everything feels rather... overwhelming."

"That's precisely how it should feel." She pressed a kiss to my temple with unexpected tenderness. "Desire, when properly awakened, tends toward intensity. Your body is discovering capacities it never knew it possessed—some disorientation seems entirely appropriate."

Her attention shifted momentarily toward the window, and I watched her expression transform from satisfied warmth to sharp alertness. She rose onto one elbow, eyes narrowing as she focused on something in the courtyard below.

"What is it?" I asked, attempting to follow her gaze despite considerable distraction.

"Movement in the shadows. Someone conducting clandestine business in the servants' wing."

Theodora's lips curved into that particular smile that invariably preceded trouble.

"And unless my eyes deceive me, which they rarely do, that particular silhouette belongs to my dear brother Edmund."

She slipped from the chaise with predatory grace, moving toward the window while I struggled to reassemble scattered composure.

"Edmund?" I managed, sitting upright and attempting to restore order to a thoroughly disheveled appearance. "But he's married—happily so, from all appearances."

"Appearances frequently deceive, particularly within palace walls."

Theodora's eyes glittered with dangerous curiosity as she tracked the shadowy figure's progress.

"Well, well. It appears my dear brother possesses unexpected depths. A mistress, perhaps? Or something more complicated?"

"Surely we shouldn't investigate such private matters…"

But Theodora was already moving. She snatched her silk robe from the nearby chair and threw it over her shoulders without bothering to secure the ties, her attention fixed entirely upon the window and whatever scandal lay beyond it.

“Come. Let’s investigate what manner of entertainment draws my brother to such questionable neighborhoods at this peculiar hour."

"Are we really going there now?" I sat upright, still breathless, my body protesting the abrupt abandonment of considerably more pleasant activities.

But Theodora had already crossed to the door, her bare feet silent against the carpet. I stared at the empty space where she had stood moments before.

Then I was moving—grabbing the shawl she had tossed in my general direction, barely managing to arrange it over my thoroughly compromised attire before slipping into the corridor.

Theodora's golden hair caught the torchlight at the passage's far end, already disappearing around a corner with the determined stride of someone who would not be deterred by anything so trivial as a lover's objections.

I followed, as I was beginning to suspect I always would when Theodora led—my education abandoned mid-lesson, my body still humming with awakened desire, and my curiosity thoroughly engaged despite every sensible objection.

Whatever secrets Edmund harbored, we were about to uncover them.
