His to Protect

Chapter 25

Ch. 25 / 30 May 07, 2026

The impact comes without warning—a black SUV slamming into us from behind with enough force to make my neck snap forward.

The world becomes chaos: screeching metal, shattering glass, and Theo's arm shooting across my chest faster than should be humanly possible. "Hold on!"

He wrenches the wheel hard, and we're careening off the road, gravel spraying against the windows as the car slides to a violent stop.

Before I can process what's happening, Theo's already out of the driver's seat. "Stay in the car, Claire. Don't move!"

Two men emerge from the SUV, and they're not here to exchange insurance information. They move with purpose, spreading out to flank Theo, and something cold crystallizes in my chest.

This isn't random. This is coordinated.

And Theo doesn't wait for them to reach him.

He launches forward with that same supernatural grace I've seen in Hugh—all controlled power and predatory precision. The first man doesn't even get his weapon raised before Theo's on him, a blur of movement that ends with the attacker crumpling to the ground.

The second man is smarter, circling wide, and I watch Theo adjust—feet shifting, weight balanced, eyes tracking his opponent with amber bleeding into the brown.

He's beautiful and terrifying, a demonstration of exactly why werewolves stayed hidden for centuries.

Humans wouldn't stand a chance if they knew what walked among them.

The fight is brutal but brief. Theo takes the second attacker down with an efficiency that suggests he's done this many times before. But while he's engaged, I don't notice the third man until it's too late.

He appears at my window like a nightmare, and before I can scream, he's yanking my door open, fingers closing around my arm with bruising force. His eyes meet mine, and what I see there makes my blood freeze.

Cold. Calculating.

The look of someone who sees me as a problem to be solved rather than a person.

My other hand catches on something sharp, and the sting of pain is enough to make me even more unbalanced.

"Got her!" he calls out, right before Theo is there, ripping him away from me with a sound that's more animal than human.

The man goes down hard, and Theo doesn't stop until he's certain the threat is neutralized.

"Claire." Theo's at my side instantly, hands running over my arms, checking for injuries. "Are you hurt? Did he hurt you? Look at me… Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, I think… Just scared. Just a cut." My voice comes out shakier than I'd like. "What the hell was that? How did they know where we'd be?"

"That's the question, isn't it?" His jaw tightens, and he's already pulling out his phone, fingers flying across the screen. "Emergency signal to Hugh. He'll be here in minutes. Stay close to me and don't move until he arrives."

The wait feels like hours.

Theo positions himself between me and the unconscious men, every line of his body radiating tension. He's not the easy-going charmer anymore—he's the loyal Gamma protecting his Alpha's mate, and the transformation is jarring.

When Hugh's car tears around the corner, I've never been so relieved to see anyone in my life.

He's out before the vehicle fully stops, and the fury rolling off him is almost visible—a physical force that makes the air feel charged. His eyes are pure amber, not a trace of gray anywhere, and the expression on his face promises violence.

"Claire."

My name sounds like a prayer and a curse wrapped together. He crosses the distance between us in four strides, pulling me into his arms so hard it almost hurts.

His hands move over my back, my shoulders, cupping my face to check for injuries. Then he does it again, and again, like he can't convince himself I'm actually here and whole. His fingers are shaking uncontrollably against my skin.

"I'm okay," I tell him, pressing closer. "Hugh, I'm okay… Theo got to them before they could really hurt me. I'm fine."

"You're not fine. You were attacked. Again." His voice is rough, wrecked. "And I—"

"Alpha." Theo approaches carefully, keeping his distance as Hugh’s head snaps in his direction, protectively pressing me closer to his body. Smart man. "That SUV was waiting at that intersection—they knew our exact route. This was clearly planned."

"Someone's feeding them information," Hugh says flatly. "Someone close. The leak isn't just access to schedules anymore, they're tracking movements in real time."

"That's what I was thinking too. We've got three suspects under surveillance, but this suggests the network might be bigger than we thought. They're organized, well-funded, and they're not giving up."

Hugh doesn't respond. He just keeps holding me, one hand pressed against my spine like he's trying to feel my heartbeat, the other cupping the back of my head.

The embrace is possessive and desperate and completely at odds with the controlled businessman I first met.

"Get these men secured," Hugh finally orders, his voice clipped. "I want them interrogated. Everything they know—who sent them, what the plan was, how they're communicating. Call in whoever you need."

"On it." Theo hesitates. "Alpha, are you…"

"I'm taking her home. We'll debrief later."

He doesn't wait for a response, just guides me toward his car with a hand on the small of my back that brooks no argument. He opens the passenger door, helps me in, and rounds to the driver's side without a word to Theo.

The drive back is in complete silence. Heavy, suffocating silence that presses against my chest. Hugh's knuckles are white on the steering wheel, his jaw clenched so tight I'm worried about his teeth.

I want to say something—anything—to break the tension, but the words won't come.

Inside the penthouse, he finally breaks. He starts pacing, hands raking through his hair, the movement almost manic. His control, that iron discipline he wears like armor, is crumbling in real time.

"I almost lost you." The words come out rough, scraped raw. "Again. They grabbed you, Claire. One more second and you'd have been gone, and I wasn't there. I should have protected you better, I should have—"

"Hugh." I cross the room and take his face in my hands, forcing him to stop, to look at me.

His eyes are still amber, still wild with fear he's been suppressing since he arrived at the scene.

"I'm here, and I'm safe, and I'm not going anywhere, do you understand? You didn't lose me."

"But I could have." His voice cracks. "Every time I think I've secured you, they find another way in. Every time I think you're safe, something happens that proves you're not. And I can't…"

He swallows hard, the muscle in his jaw jumping and I want to nuzzle against it just to give him a glimpse of comfort he clearly needs.

"I can't survive losing you. Not now. Not ever."

"Then let me be here with you." My thumbs trace his cheekbones, his jaw, the tension that won't release. "I'm not fragile, Hugh. I'm not going to break. But I need you to stop running from this and just be with me. Can you do that?"

The answer comes without words. He kisses me like he's drowning and I'm air, desperate and consuming and completely stripped of restraint.

His hands frame my face, then slide into my hair, pulling me closer until there's no space between us. The kiss is relief and terror and something deeper. Acknowledgment, maybe. That we're both in too far to pretend otherwise.

When he finally pulls back, we're both breathing hard. His forehead rests against mine, eyes closed.

"I'm not going anywhere…" I whisper. "Whatever's coming, we face it together. That's how this works now."
