Hate Me Like You Love Me

Chapter 31

Ch. 31 / 120 May 04, 2026

Serena’s POV

Some announcements change everything in the space between one heartbeat and the next.

The words hang in the crystalline air of the Bennett dining room like smoke from an explosion, and I don't immediately notice how completely numb my hand has become beneath Caleb's crushing grip under the mahogany table.

My father's voice carries on about "wonderful news" and "perfect timing," while Richard Bennett nods with the satisfied expression of a man whose chess pieces have moved exactly where he planned.

Catherine reaches across to squeeze my shoulder, her smile bright enough to power the chandelier above us. "Oh, sweetheart, this is so exciting. Lucas is such a lovely young man."

I want to laugh. Or scream. Or both.

Instead, I sit perfectly still while my world tilts sideways, trying to process the calculated precision of what just happened.

The Bennetts didn't stumble into this announcement—they orchestrated every word, every pause, every carefully modulated tone of surprise and delight.

But how much do they actually know about what happened at that party? How far are they willing to push this charade?

Across the table, Mia sits frozen with her wine glass halfway to her lips, eyes wide with barely concealed horror. She's trying desperately to catch my attention, but I can't meet her gaze.

Can't risk the questions I'd see there, the concern that would unravel me completely.

"Serena, darling, what do you think?" Patricia Bennett's voice floats over the excited chatter, saccharine sweet with false maternal warmth.

"I think—" Caleb begins, his voice tight with barely restrained fury.

My nails dig into his skin hard enough to draw blood, silencing him before he can detonate this entire evening. The muscles in his forearm go rigid beneath my grip, but he stops talking.

We can't risk a confrontation here, not until I understand exactly what Lucas is planning and how much ammunition his family has stockpiled.

"Actually," Lucas says, rising from his chair with the fluid grace of someone who's rehearsed this moment, "if I may address everyone before we go any further."

He stands with his hands clasped behind his back, the picture of respectful nobility. The overhead light catches the planes of his face, casting shadows that should look sinister but somehow don't. He looks earnest, hopeful, genuinely humble.

"First, I want to address what happened at the party a few weeks ago," he continues, his voice carrying that same wounded sincerity that made my skin crawl earlier.

"I know it looked bad—two young men fighting over something that could have been handled with words instead of fists. I take full responsibility for my part in that misunderstanding."

Misunderstanding. The word sits in my stomach like a stone.

"But I have nothing but respect for Caleb's actions that night."

Lucas says, turning toward where Caleb sits rigid as carved marble beside me.

"He was protecting his sister the way any loving brother would. The loyalty he showed, the way he stepped in when he thought Serena was in an uncomfortable situation—that's exactly the kind of family man I hope to be someday."

The emphasis he places on sister and brother makes Caleb's jaw clench so hard I fear it might actually crack. His free hand curls into a fist on the table, knuckles white against the dark wood.

"Which brings me to my real purpose tonight. Serena, I've had feelings for you for a very long time." ‘

Lucas continues, his gaze finding mine across the flickering candlelight.

"Deeper feelings than I've ever experienced with anyone else. I know we're young, and I would never want to pressure you into anything you're not ready for. We have time—until after college graduation. No rush at all."

He turns toward my father with a slight bow of his head, the gesture so perfectly old-fashioned that Catherine actually sighs with approval.

"Mr. Lakin, I was raised to do things the traditional way. I'm asking for your blessing to court your daughter properly, with the full knowledge and support of both our families. I promise you that my intentions are completely honorable."

The wrongness of it crashes over me in waves. Everything was too perfect, too rehearsed, too smoothly delivered. Lucas has had weeks to prepare for this moment, weeks to craft every word and gesture for maximum impact.

But beneath the performance, I sense something else—a confidence that chills me to the bone.

"Well," my father says, his voice warm with paternal pride, "this is certainly unexpected. But Lucas, your maturity in handling this situation, your respect for our family traditions…"

"It's beautiful," Catherine interjects, pressing her hands to her heart. "The way you're approaching this, so thoughtfully, so respectfully. Your parents raised you right."

Patricia and Richard exchange triumphant glances that they think no one notices. But I see them. I see the satisfied curve of Patricia's lips, the way Richard nods like a general whose battle plan is unfolding perfectly.

"Of course, there's no pressure," my father continues, reaching across the table to cover my free hand with his. "Serena, you know we'd never want you to feel rushed into anything. But if this is something you're open to exploring..."

"We give our cautious consent," Catherine adds quickly. "With the understanding that both of you are young, that feelings can change, that…"

The screech of chair legs against hardwood cuts through her words like a blade.

Caleb shoves back from the table so violently that his wine glass topples, red liquid bleeding across the white tablecloth.

He doesn't say a word, doesn't look at any of us, just strides toward the doorway with his shoulders rigid and his hands clenched into fists.

My hand feels suddenly cold and hollow without his warmth, like he took all the oxygen in the room with him when he left.

Every instinct screams at me to follow, to chase after him and explain, but how can I? What possible reason could I give for abandoning this conversation to comfort my stepbrother?

"I completely understand his protectiveness."

Lucas says smoothly, settling back into his chair as if nothing happened.

"It's actually one of the things I admire most about your family dynamic. Brothers naturally want to shield their sisters from any potential heartbreak."

The sincerity in his voice makes my skin crawl.

"I plan to speak with him privately tomorrow, to apologize for any misunderstanding between us and to assure him that my feelings for Serena are genuine. I hope we can move past any tension and build the kind of relationship that brothers-in-law should have."

"That's very mature of you," my father says, approval radiating from every word.

I watch Lucas's face as he speaks, searching for cracks in the performance, for any hint of the predator I know lurks beneath the surface.

But there's nothing—just earnest hope and wounded nobility and the faint smile of a man who genuinely believes every word falling from his lips.

That's what terrifies me most of all. He's not performing for them, he's not even performing for me.

Somewhere in the twisted landscape of his mind, Lucas Bennett has convinced himself that he's the hero of this story.
