Hail to the New Queen

Chapter 27

Ch. 27 / 30 Mar 26, 2026

Daniel's study has transformed into a war room of domestic planning. Folders cover every surface, each labeled in his precise handwriting. Security protocols. Living arrangements. Announcement strategies.

The coronation is one week away. Apparently, that means time to discuss where I'll be sleeping afterward.

"The Queen's chambers," he says, sliding a floor plan across the desk. "We'd move in together officially. Publicly."

I stare at the blueprint like it might bite me. "Together. As in, openly cohabitating. While I'm secretly pregnant and newly crowned."

"The announcement would control the narrative." His grey-green eyes hold mine with that infuriating calm. "A united front. The queen and her consort, building a future together."

"Consort." I test the word. "That's quite the title upgrade from 'the man I'm sleeping with.'"

"I was hoping for something slightly more dignified, yes."

I pace toward the window, arms crossed over my barely concealed belly. Nineteen weeks pregnant. One week until coronation. The mathematics of scandal multiply in my head with alarming speed.

"Daniel, the timing is impossible. The pregnancy will become obvious within weeks. Adding our relationship to the mix—"

"Is exactly why we should announce together." He rises, crossing to stand beside me. "Scandals are harder to weaponize when you've already claimed them."

"That's remarkably optimistic for a career diplomat."

"I've learned optimism from watching you." His voice softens. "You've survived everything the Valdrens threw at you. Everything the Montclairs attempted. This is just another battle."

"A battle where I'm visibly pregnant with another man's child while moving in with my older lover?" I laugh despite myself. "That's several battles. Possibly a full military campaign."

"I prefer to think of it as efficient multitasking."

The humor doesn't quite mask the vulnerability beneath his composure. I've learned to read Daniel Cromwell's micro-expressions. Right now, they're screaming something he won't say directly.

"Are you proposing?" The question escapes before I can filter it. "Because this sounds suspiciously like a proposal disguised as logistics."

Daniel is quiet for a long moment. His jaw works silently, searching for words that won't terrify us both.

"I'm proposing whatever you want." His voice drops lower. "Marriage, if you'll have me. Partnership, if that suits better. Something without a name, if that's what feels right."

"That's remarkably flexible for someone who color-codes his documentation."

"Christina." He takes my hands, fingers threading through mine with devastating tenderness. "I'm tired of hiding. Tired of stolen moments and careful distances. I want to stand beside you openly."

The sincerity in his eyes cuts through every defense I've built. This man chose me knowing everything—the pregnancy, the complications, the chaos.

"You want to stop hiding," I echo softly.

"I want to stop pretending I'm just your advisor. Pretending I don't love you."

The word lands like a physical touch. Love. He's never said it quite so directly before.

"Daniel—"

"You don't have to say it back. I'm not asking for declarations." He squeezes my hands gently. "I'm asking for a chance. To build something real."

The knot forming in my stomach tightens with each heartbeat. Maryanna's accusations echo in my memory. Daniel's name in places it shouldn't be.

But he's here. He stayed. He came back when he could have walked away.

"Yes." The word emerges smaller than intended. "We'll figure out the details after coronation. But yes. I'm committing to you."

His smile transforms his entire face. Twenty years fall away, leaving something young and hopeful and terrifyingly open.

When he kisses me, it's tender and certain. His hands cup my face like I'm something precious. I sink into the warmth, trying to ignore the doubts coiling beneath my ribs.

Trying to ignore Hunter's taste that still ghosts my lips.

We separate eventually. Daniel presses his forehead to mine, breathing slowly.

"I should let you rest," he murmurs. "Early meetings tomorrow."

"The sprint continues."

"The sprint continues." He kisses my forehead one final time. "Goodnight, Your Majesty."

"I'm not queen yet."

"Close enough." His smile lingers as he leaves.

The door closes. Silence descends.

I should feel relieved. Happy, even. I just committed to a future with a man who loves me. Who chose me despite everything.

Instead, the knot in my stomach only tightens.

The knock comes an hour later. Different from Daniel's measured rhythm. Urgent. Insistent.

I open the door to find Hunter looking like he hasn't slept in days. Dark circles shadow his blue eyes. His jaw carries three days of stubble.

"I found more." He's already moving past me, folder clutched like a weapon. "About the Montclairs. The conspiracy."

My heart stutters. "What kind of more?"

He spreads documents across my desk with frantic precision. Financial records. Communications. Dates circled in red ink.

"Payments routed through shell accounts. Twenty years ago." His finger traces the trail of numbers. "Someone with palace access was feeding information to Montclair contacts."

I scan the evidence, blood chilling with each page. The timeline is unmistakable. Three weeks before my mother's death. Two weeks. One week. Three days.

"They orchestrated it." My voice comes out hollow. "The assassination. It wasn't random violence."

"The Montclairs had her killed." Hunter's jaw tightens. "To eliminate the succession threat. To position themselves for the throne."

Twenty years of believing my mother died protecting me. Twenty years of not knowing the full horror of what really happened.

"There's something else." His hesitation makes my stomach drop further. "The financial trails—they don't just connect to Montclair accounts."

"What do you mean?"

He pulls out another document. Points to a name I don't want to see.

"Some payments passed through old Cromwell accounts." His voice is careful. Measured. "Not Daniel specifically. Could be his father. Another relative from that era."

My blood turns to ice.

"The family was connected somehow," Hunter continues quietly. "I don't know what it means yet. But you should know."

I stare at the papers. At the Cromwell name appearing in proximity to payments that funded my mother's murder.

"Thank you." The words scrape out mechanically. "For telling me."

Hunter nods slowly. His eyes hold something I don't have the capacity to examine right now.

"I'll keep investigating. Find out exactly what the Cromwell connection means."

"Do that."

He leaves without farewell. The door closes with quiet finality.

I stand alone with the folder that might contain the destruction of everything I just promised to build.

Daniel's father. Or another relative. Not Daniel specifically.

But his family. His blood. Connected somehow to the flow of money that killed my mother.

I sink into my chair, evidence spread before me like an autopsy of my future.

An hour ago, I committed to building a life with Daniel Cromwell. I said yes with hope blooming in my chest despite every reasonable objection.

Now I stare at his family name on documents that reek of conspiracy and murder.

The man who held me tonight. Who kissed me with devastating tenderness. Who promised to stop hiding.

What secrets are buried in his family's past? What shadows follow the name I just agreed to join my own to?

The coronation is one week away. I'm about to become queen. And I have no idea if the man I love is connected to the people who destroyed my family.
