Darling, You Lose

Crossing the Line

Ch. 7 / 60 Apr 26, 2025

Alexander sat in his office, the air thick as he scrolled through the latest news reports about Elena Beaumont. She was everywhere—her name gracing headlines, her image plastered on every financial column as the mysterious force shaking up Chicago’s business elite. But what infuriated him most wasn’t the press coverage. It was the man standing beside her in every photograph: Rafael Castellanos.

Alexander clenched his fists, his jaw tightening as he stared at the screen. Rafael. The name alone brought a bitter taste to his mouth. Years ago, Alexander had outmaneuvered him in a high-stakes deal, a move that had catapulted Hartley Enterprises into dominance while sinking Rafael’s empire into scandal. At the time, Alexander had brushed off Rafael’s threats of revenge as the bitter ramblings of a defeated man.

But now Rafael was back—and he had Elena by his side.

The tension only deepened at an exclusive charity gala that evening. Alexander attended out of obligation, though his mind was consumed with the chaos Elena had unleashed. The moment he walked into the grand ballroom, his eyes searched for her, and it didn’t take long to find her.

There she was, standing under the glow of a crystal chandelier, dressed in a sleek emerald gown that commanded the room’s attention. Beside her was Rafael, looking every bit the predator Alexander remembered—sharp suit, confident smirk, and a hand resting possessively on Elena’s waist.

The sight made Alexander’s blood boil. He couldn’t decide what infuriated him more: the public display of Rafael’s influence or the way Elena seemed to laugh so easily at his side.

“Alexander.”

He turned to see Vivienne, her lips painted in a strained smile, her fingers clutching a champagne flute. “I’ve been trying to get your attention all night.”

“I’m busy,” he replied curtly, his gaze flicking back toward Elena and Rafael.

Vivienne followed his eyes, her expression souring. “So, it’s true. You can’t stop obsessing over her.”

Alexander scoffed, draining his whiskey. “Don’t be ridiculous, Vivienne.”

“Ridiculous?” she snapped, her voice low but sharp. “You’ve barely spoken to me in days, and now you can’t take your eyes off her. She’s trying to destroy you, Alexander, and you’re letting her.”

Alexander finally turned to face her, his blue eyes cold. “This isn’t about you, Vivienne. It’s about my company—my legacy.”

“No, it’s about her,” Vivienne spat. “Admit it. You still love her, don’t you?”

For a moment, Alexander said nothing, his jaw tightening. Finally, he muttered, “It doesn’t matter what I feel. She’s made her choice, and I have to deal with it.”

Vivienne’s face crumpled, but before she could respond, Alexander had already walked away, leaving her standing alone in the crowd.

Across the room, Elena and Rafael stood at the center of a group of influential investors. Rafael, ever the charmer, was telling a story about his latest acquisition, his deep, confident voice commanding attention.

But Elena was only half-listening. She had noticed Alexander the moment he entered the room, and she could feel his gaze on her now, heavy with anger and something else she couldn’t quite place.

“Are you with me, mi reina?” Rafael’s voice broke through her thoughts.

She turned to him, her smile soft but calculated. “Always.”

Rafael chuckled, leaning in slightly. “You’re distracted.”

“Just thinking about the next move,” Elena replied smoothly, though she knew Rafael could read her better than most.

His dark eyes searched hers, and for a moment, the playful smirk on his lips faltered. “Careful, Elena,” he murmured, his voice low. “The game gets messy when emotions come into play.”

Elena didn’t flinch. “I don’t let emotions cloud my judgment.”

Rafael’s smile returned, though his gaze lingered on her for a moment too long. “Good. Because we’re almost at the finish line.”

The next morning, Vivienne found Alexander in his study, pacing with the same restless energy that had consumed him for days.

“Alexander,” she said softly, hesitating at the door.

“What is it, Vivienne?” he asked without looking at her, his tone sharp.

She stepped inside, her hands wringing nervously. “I wanted to talk. About us.”

“There is no ‘us,’ Vivienne,” he snapped, turning to face her. “Not when I’m trying to stop my company from collapsing.”

Her eyes filled with tears, but Alexander didn’t seem to care. “You’re obsessed with her,” Vivienne said, her voice trembling. “She’s destroying everything, and you’re letting her.”

Alexander’s face darkened. “Get out,” he said coldly.

Vivienne flinched as if he had struck her. “You’ll regret this,” she whispered before storming out.

Later that day, Alexander’s worst fears came true. Elena called a press conference, her presence commanding as she stood before a wall of flashing cameras. She wore a tailored black suit, her confidence radiating as she addressed the room.

“I’m here today to announce an important milestone,” she began, her voice calm and composed. “As of this morning, I have acquired a controlling stake in Hartley Enterprises. Effective immediately, I will serve as Chairwoman and CEO.”

The room erupted in murmurs, reporters scrambling to ask questions, but Elena remained poised, her gaze steady.

Watching the broadcast from his office, Alexander froze, his hands curling into fists. She had done it. She had taken everything.

The screen cut to black, leaving Alexander seething with humiliation.
