Sunday morning arrived soft and golden.
Charles led me directly to Rosemary's stall. She nickered when she saw me, pushing her nose against my palm with familiar affection. I laughed, stroking the white blaze that ran down her face like a lightning bolt.
"She remembers you," Charles said, watching us with an expression I couldn't quite read.
"She's remarkable. So gentle, but you can feel the spirit underneath."
I scratched behind her ears, and she leaned into my touch with obvious pleasure. "I wish I could take her home with me. Keep her in my tiny London flat."
Charles was quiet for a moment. Then: "She's yours."
I turned, certain I'd misheard. "What?"
"Rosemary. She's yours."
His voice was calm, matter-of-fact, as if he'd just offered me a cup of tea.
"I've already arranged boarding here at the estate. You can visit whenever you like—weekends, holidays, whenever you need to escape the city. The staff will care for her when you can't be here."
I stared at him, speechless. The magnitude of the gift rendered words inadequate.
"Charles, I can't accept this. A horse, the boarding costs alone, the care, the equipment, it's too much. Far too much."
"You can and you should accept it."
He stepped closer, his blue eyes holding mine with quiet intensity.
"I've watched you come alive with her, Belle. Yesterday, when you were riding, when you were here in the stables—I saw someone I'd never seen before. Someone joyful. Unguarded. Free."
His hand found mine, squeezing gently.
"When's the last time something made you that happy? Truly happy, not just professionally satisfied or temporarily distracted?"
I opened my mouth to answer. Nothing came out.
Tears pricked my eyes. I blinked them back, but not quickly enough. I looked at Rosemary, then back at Charles. The tears spilled over despite my best efforts.
He saw me. Really saw me—not the professional facade, not the competent assistant, not the woman who measured her worth through usefulness to others.
He saw the girl who'd lost something precious at twelve and never stopped mourning it.
"Thank you," I whispered. "I don't know what else to say."
"You don't have to say anything." He smiled, soft and warm. "Just promise me you'll visit her. That you'll let yourself have this."
"I promise."
That evening, we settled by the fireplace in the manor's sitting room. Wine in hand, fire crackling, the comfortable silence of two people who'd run out of small talk and found they didn't need it.
I was watching the flames dance when Charles spoke.
"I need to tell you something." His voice had shifted—heavier somehow, weighted with something he'd been carrying. "Something I should have told you a long time ago."
I turned to face him, unease prickling at the back of my neck. "What is it?"
"I knew about your relationship." He met my eyes steadily, unflinching. "With James. I've known for over a year."
My blood ran cold.
"What?" The word came out strangled, barely audible over the crackling fire. "How? We were so careful… We never—"
"Small things. The way you looked at each other when you thought no one was watching. The way your schedules aligned too perfectly to be coincidence. The way he touched your shoulder at the Christmas party, just for a moment, before catching himself."
My mind raced, spinning through the implications. "Why didn't you say anything? I could have been fired. We broke company policy—the no-dating rule exists specifically to prevent…"
"Because I couldn't bear to lose you."
The words landed like a physical blow.
"What?"
"You were taken." His voice cracked on the word, raw with something I'd never heard from him before. "You belonged to someone else, and it was torture. Watching you with him. Knowing you went home to him. Imagining..."
He stopped, took a breath.
"But having you near, even like that, was better than not having you at all. So I said nothing. I pretended I didn't see. I buried what I felt and told myself that being your mentor was enough."
I was shaking. Whether from shock or something else, I couldn't tell.
"Charles..."
"I'm not a young man, Belle."
He turned toward me fully, firelight casting shadows across his distinguished features.
"And I know this is complicated. You work for me. There's an age difference that some would find inappropriate. There are a hundred reasons why this is a terrible idea."
He paused, gathering himself.
"But I have feelings for you. And after this weekend, after watching you ride and laugh and cry over a horse... I can't pretend anymore. I won't."
The confession hung between us, heavy and undeniable.
I should pull back. Should think clearly, rationally, about everything this meant. Instead, I crossed the space between us.
The kiss was slow. Deliberate. I gave him time to pull away, to reconsider, to be the sensible one.
He didn't.
His hands found my waist, drawing me closer. Mine found his chest, feeling his heartbeat quicken beneath my palms. The kiss deepened, hungry and tender all at once.
We moved to the rug before the fireplace, the heat of the flames nothing compared to what burned between us.
I stopped fighting what I'd been feeling—stopped questioning, stopped analyzing, stopped being practical, responsible Belle who didn't have time for dreams.
I wanted this. I wanted him. And tonight, I let myself have it.
Charles lowered me onto the soft rug, firelight casting golden shadows across his face. His hands trembled slightly as they found the hem of my sweater—this powerful man, shaking because he wanted me.
We undressed each other slowly, savoring each revelation. His mouth traced a burning path down my neck, my collarbone, the curve of my breasts.
When his lips closed around my nipple, I arched into him, fingers tangling in his silver hair.
"I've imagined this so many times," he murmured against my skin. "The reality is so much better"
When the last barriers fell away, he settled between my thighs, skin against skin. The hard length of him pressed against my center, and the anticipation alone made me tremble.
His hand slipped between us, fingers finding my slick heat. I cried out at the first touch, already desperate.
"So wet," he breathed, stroking me with maddening patience. "Is this all for me?"
"Yes. Please, Charles…"
He worked me with focused precision, two fingers sliding inside while his thumb circled my clit. Learning my body. Reading my responses.
The tension built impossibly, coiling tighter until I shattered with his name on my lips.
He kissed me through the aftershocks, then positioned himself at my entrance. The stretch as he pushed forward was exquisite, filling me completely. I gasped, nails digging into his shoulders.
"Move," I breathed. "Please move."
He did.
Deep and slow and devastating. He made love to me like a man who'd been starving for decades. Every stroke touched something beyond physical pleasure—intimacy, connection, two lonely people finding solace.
I wrapped my legs around him, pulling him deeper, and his control began to fray. His pace increased, thrusts growing harder, more urgent. His hand found my clit again, pushing me toward the edge.
"Come with me," he groaned.
I shattered, clenching around him as ecstasy tore through me. He followed moments later, my name spilling from his lips as he buried himself deep and let go.
We collapsed together, tangled and breathless, the fire crackling softly beside us. Charles gathered me against his chest, and I listened to his heartbeat slow from racing to steady.
I should have felt guilty. Should have felt the weight of complications pressing down on me.
Instead, I felt lighter than I had in years. Held. Seen. Wanted for something beyond what I could do or who I could be useful to.
I closed my eyes, letting the warmth of the fire and the man beside me chase away every shadow.
