Choose Your Alpha, Princess

chapter 28

Ch. 28 / 30 May 04, 2026

POV Odette

Nathaniel's face transformed with recognition—not surprise but confirmation of something he'd been waiting to see.

"Finally." The word escaped him in a laugh, pure happiness breaking through his usual control. "It's about time."

"What's finally?" I demanded, though my skin already knew, tingling where his presence pressed against my awareness.

"Tell me what you're feeling right now." He stepped closer, close enough that I had to tilt my head back to meet his eyes. "Don't think, just tell me."

"I—"

The words tangled on my tongue. How to describe the click in my blood, the settling in my bones, the way the air suddenly fit perfectly in my lungs?

"It's like everything just... aligned. Like I've been standing crooked my whole life and suddenly I'm straight."

"Yes." His hands framed my face with trembling reverence. "That's exactly it."

"What is this, Nathaniel?"

"The one thing I didn't tell you. The witch I consulted—she didn't just confirm the pregnancy." His thumbs traced my cheekbones. "She told me why everything between us has been so intense, so immediate, so impossible to resist."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "Tell me."

"We're fated mates, Odette." The words landed between us. "The Moon Goddess bound us before we were born. I felt it that first night in the bar—this pull like gravity, like magnetism, like coming home."

"That's impossible." Tears burned my eyes without warning. "If we were fated mates, I would have known. I would have felt it immediately—"

"Would you?" His voice gentled. "You were drowning in grief that night. Betrayed by your husband, drunk on whiskey and rage. Your wolf was wounded, defensive, closed off to everything but survival."

"But you felt it."

"Because I wasn't broken." No judgment in the words, just fact. "I walked into that bar whole, searching, ready. You walked in shattered, and still your wolf reached for mine. That's why I couldn't stay away. Why I crossed that room like a man possessed."

"If this is true—"

My voice cracked.

"If we're truly fated mates, why didn't I feel it? All these weeks, standing right next to you, carrying your child—"

"The witch had an answer for that too." He cupped my cheek, thumb catching a tear I hadn't realized had fallen. "She said something in you was bound. By grief, by obligation, by six years of forcing yourself into a relationship and a marriage that never quite fit. The bond was muffled, not broken."

"Muffled." The word tasted bitter. "By my own choices."

"By your loyalty. Your determination to honor vows even when they were killing you." His other hand settled over my stomach with infinite care. "But not our little one. The pup knew immediately. That's why your body accepted my seed when it had rejected Devon's for years. Your wolf recognized its mate even when your mind couldn't."

"The signs were right there." A broken laugh escaped me. "The way my wolf reacted that first night, how the pain stopped when you touched me, how I couldn't stay away even when I tried."

"You see it now though." Not a question. "Feel it."

"Like fire in my veins." I pressed closer, needing his warmth. "Like I could track you across continents by scent alone. Like my bones would break if you walked away."

"I'm never walking away." He kissed me softly, reverently, then pulled back to meet my eyes. "You're mine, Odette. Have been since before we were born. The Moon Goddess just took her time bringing us together."

"Through disaster and betrayal and an accidental pregnancy."

"Through whatever was necessary." He kissed me again, deeper this time, then moved his mouth to my ear. "Do you have any idea what I want to do to you right now? How many ways I want to claim you, mark you, make sure every wolf in existence knows you belong to me?"

Heat flooded through me at his words, at the explicit images he painted with that dark voice. "Nathaniel—"

"I want to take you against every surface in this palace. Want to hear you scream my name until the guards come running. Want to put more pups in you until your body remembers no touch but mine."

"Stop." But I was laughing, blushing, pressing closer instead of pulling away. "Someone could hear—"

"Let them. Let everyone know the Princess found her fated mate." He nipped at my throat, making me gasp. "That she's carrying my heir. That she's mine in every way that matters."

That night, skin to skin in my bed with moonlight painting silver across our bodies, I traced patterns on Nathaniel's chest and asked the question that had been haunting me.

"Why couldn't I conceive with Devon? Three years we tried, and nothing. But with you—once was enough."

Nathaniel caught my hand, bringing it to his lips. "You know why."

"Tell me anyway."

"Your body knew what your mind couldn't accept. It refused to create life with the wrong mate." He shifted, pulling me closer. "Wolves can force many things, but new life? That requires truth. Your womb stayed empty because your wolf knew Devon wasn't your destiny."

"That sounds like mythology, not biology."

"It sounds like fate." His hand covered my stomach where our child grew. "Your body was waiting for the right seed. Mine. The one that would create not just a pup, but a future."

"Fate with teeth," I murmured. "Taking what it wants regardless of our plans."

"Exactly like you," he laughed, low and dark. "My Princess Odette, who fought destiny every step until it pinned her down and made her see."

"I prefer to think I chose it."

"Of course you do." He kissed me again, slow and thorough. "And I'll let you keep believing that, as long as you choose me every time."

"Every time," I promised, and meant it down to my bones.

The fated mate bond hummed between us, no longer muffled, no longer denied. Tomorrow would bring ceremonies and politics and all the complications of uniting two royal houses. But tonight, in this perfect moment, we were just two wolves who'd found their way home.
