[Vivien’s POV]
The kiss begins as something desperate and ragged—his mouth burning against mine, his hands fisted in my hair, recent weeks and earlier years of restraint finally collapsed into a single breathless point that tastes of want and recklessness and him.
And then something shifts inside me. Beneath the wanting, beneath the relief, beneath every careful time I spent telling myself no—something older and sleeker surfaces, slow and certain as a tide coming in.
The awareness of how entirely this dangerous, battle-hardened knight has surrendered himself—completely, willingly, as if he has been waiting for nothing else.
I pull back. Just enough to see his face—the devastation of the pause written in every line, those brown-green eyes dark and open and helpless in a way I have never once seen him allow with anyone else.
The power of it moves through me like heat through glass. Something ancient, something mine—the hunger not just for him but for this: command, possession, the slow intoxicating certainty that he would do anything I asked.
I press my palm flat against his chest and push. His eyes go wide for one unguarded instant, and then he drops to his knees in front of me without resistance, without hesitation, with the ease of a man who has been waiting for exactly this permission.
He waits. Hands still at his sides. Devoted and patient and utterly without conditions—looking up at me as if this is where he was always meant to be.
I slide my fingers into his hair, dark and faintly damp at the roots, and grip slowly at the base. His jaw goes soft on the exhale. His throat works around a sound he does not allow out.
"If we do this," I say, and my voice comes out steady, composed, entirely unlike the riot inside my chest, "we do it my way. You obey me. You stop when I say stop. And you beg when I want to hear you beg."
I tighten my grip at the roots and feel him shudder beneath my hands. "Do you understand me, Jasper?"
His answer comes without the smallest hesitation—scraped raw and low: "Yes." One word. His entire will, delivered in a single syllable, and it goes straight through me.
"Good boy." I tilt his chin up with two fingers and feel his quiet whimper with my whole body. "Undress me. Slowly. Your mouth first."
He rises from his knees with the care of a man given something precious. His hands find the lacings at my back with quiet precision—never rushing, never taking more than I grant—while his mouth begins at the curve of my shoulder.
He follows each inch of bare skin the releasing laces reveal, pressing warm lips to my spine in slow sequence—lingering where I direct, returning when I instruct, his breathing uneven against my skin and his hands trembling with the effort of restraint.
When the gown pools at my feet I order him back to his knees, and he goes without a sound. His mouth finds the inside of my knee—then higher, ready to move only as I permit, to pause precisely where I say, his broad hands pressed flat against the floor because I have not given him leave to move them.
He whispers against my skin between every kiss—broken, reverent phrases: beautiful and yours and please—his voice stripped entirely of the cold precision he shows the world, and what remains is pure and honest and wholly undone.
My fingers tighten in his hair and I feel the shudder that runs through his whole body in answer, from his scalp down to his hands pressing harder against the floor.
When I finally allow it, I pull him upright by the collar, strip his shirt from his shoulders, and push him back onto the bed.
He grips the carved bedframe above his head the instant I tell him to—not a breath before—his knuckles going bone-white, every tendon across his chest and arms drawn rigid with the effort of remaining still.
He is broad and scarred and fully hard against me, and the visible strain of his restraint—the white-knuckled grip, the locked jaw, every tendon pulled taut from shoulder to wrist—is more intoxicating than anything I have ever seen.
I take him slowly, with full deliberate intent. I set the angle, the depth, the pace—rolling my hips on my own terms and no one else's—watching him shudder beneath me with the controlled tension of a man clinging to the last instruction given.
His hips press upward only when I permit, which I grant sparingly—because watching him strain for permission, watching the effort of submission move through every corded line of him, is a pleasure that is entirely its own.
He breathes in sharp, ragged increments. The heat of him pulses beneath me, deep and full; his thighs tremble involuntarily under mine, and he fights every instinct to move with white-knuckled, jaw-clenched, shaking stillness.
"Jasper." I say his name low and deliberate when he shifts without permission, and the word lands like a blade.
He stills immediately, a broken sound tearing from his throat, his grip on the bedframe tightening until the wood groans beneath his hands.
He begs, because I tell him to. The words come fractured and breathless—please and my lady and Vivien—each one more desperate and unguarded than the last, his voice stripped bare of everything except want, until I feel him unraveling completely beneath me and allow myself to follow.
Sensation breaks open in long, shuddering waves that I take fully and without restraint, on my terms and no one else's.
After years of being told where to stand, whom to wed, what to want, what to become—every term dictated by someone else's careful design—controlling his pleasure and claiming my own feels like a language I was never taught but have always known.
It feels like the first real freedom I have ever tasted. Not borrowed. Not performed. Mine.
We lie still. Without a word, Jasper slides from the bed and settles at my feet—his head resting heavy against my thigh, his breathing slow and easy, the battle-hardened lines of him finally loose and unguarded.
He is quiet for a long moment. Then, pressed warm against my skin: "I am yours. Completely. Whatever you need." The words are low, barely voiced—not sentiment, but allegiance, sworn to the only flag he has ever chosen.
I stroke his hair slowly. The familiar weight of his head against my leg, the quiet rhythm of his breathing—it ought not feel like the most solid thing in my life. It does, regardless.
"Leave before dawn," I tell him, voice as steady as the flame beside the bed. "Don't let anyone see you."
He lifts his head and presses a single, unhurried kiss to my knee—slow and deliberate, full of everything neither of us will say. Then he rises, pulls his shirt over his shoulders, steps into his breeches, and lifts his boots from the floor without putting them on.
He pauses at the door—one hand on the handle, his back to me. "Goodnight, my lady," he says quietly. Not a farewell. The shape of a vow.
The door closes with a small, precise click. And then—from the corridor beyond it—the sharp sound of footsteps. Purposeful, unhurried. Not his.
