Bodyguard For A Virgin

Chapter 46

Ch. 46 / 150 May 04, 2026

POV Noelle

“Noelle, listen to me before you explode.” Owen’s voice is too calm, too even. It’s the voice he uses when he’s already decided something terrible.

I stop in the middle of our kitchen, still holding Luna’s bottle. “Tell me you didn’t.”

He doesn’t answer. That silence—thick, familiar, fatal—tells me everything.

I set the bottle down, slow, careful, as if noise alone could break what’s left of my sanity. “You made a deal.”

He exhales, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s not what you think.”

“Then tell me what I should think,” I snap. “Because the DA called this morning asking if I’d like to attend a ‘protective briefing.’ You want to guess how I found out? From Rhea, not you.”

He looks up then, and I wish he hadn’t. The guilt in his eyes confirms it. “Vale offered me something I couldn’t refuse.”

“Freedom,” I whisper.

He nods once. “In exchange for Silas.”

The room tilts. “No.”

“Noelle—”

“No!” I slam my palms on the counter. “You’re not doing this again. You’re not walking back into that man’s world. You got us out. We survived. Luna needs you here, not in some federal sting operation with your name on a coffin.”

He steps closer, voice low. “You think I want this? You think I enjoy being Vale’s pawn? But this isn’t just about us anymore.”

“Yes, it is!” My voice cracks. “It’s exactly about us. About our daughter, about every night you promised me that chapter of your life was over.”

He drags a hand across his face. “It’s never over until he’s gone.”

I shake my head, tears burning behind my eyes. “That’s what you said last time. And you almost didn’t come back.”

The doorbell interrupts us.

Rhea steps in without waiting, her usual calm replaced by grim urgency. “Vale’s waiting in the car downstairs. You’ve got five minutes before the deal expires.”

I turn on her. “You knew?”

She hesitates. “I tried to talk him out of it.”

I glare at Owen. “And you still said yes?”

He meets my eyes. “I had to.”

“Had to?” I repeat, the word trembling like a threat. “No, Owen, you chose to.”

Vale’s voice carries faintly from the hallway—cool, sharp, precise. “Mrs. Tate, may I come in?”

I want to throw her out, but Owen nods once, and I feel my control unravel.

She steps into the kitchen, heels clicking on the tile. “Mrs. Tate,” she says smoothly, “your husband’s cooperation could save dozens of lives. Silas Kane has networks in five cities. Owen’s the only one who can reach him without raising alarms.”

I glare at her. “You’re asking him to commit suicide.”

“I’m asking him to end something that should’ve ended years ago.”

I take a step forward, shaking. “You want freedom for him? He already paid for his crimes—with blood, time, and his own sanity. You don’t get to use my husband as bait because your department failed to do its job.”

Vale doesn’t flinch. “He came to me, Mrs. Tate.”

My stomach drops. “What?”

Owen finally speaks. “I offered myself.”

My breath catches. “Why?”

“Because Silas won’t stop until he burns everything I love. If I don’t finish this, he’ll come for you. For Luna.”

“Then we’ll run,” I whisper, desperate. “We’ll disappear again. Change our names, our lives—”

He shakes his head. “Running’s just another way of dying slowly.”

Rhea folds her arms, voice low. “He’s right, Noelle. If Silas finds us, there’s no place far enough.”

I turn on her, fury flooding my chest. “You’re supposed to protect him, not throw him back into the fire!”

“I’ll be there,” she says evenly. “Every step.”

I look back at Owen, searching for a trace of doubt, a flicker of hesitation. There’s none. Only that quiet, unbearable resolve I fell in love with—the same one that terrifies me.

Vale sets a folder on the table. “If he gives us Silas Kane—names, locations, proof—the warrant on him disappears. Full immunity, clean record. He walks free.”

“And if he fails?” I ask.

She doesn’t blink. “Then he won’t need a record.”

My throat tightens. “You’re disgusting.”

“Realistic,” she replies.

I take a step closer until I’m nose to nose with her. “You’re sending a man to do your job because you don’t have the courage to get your own hands dirty.”

Vale smiles faintly. “He volunteered. Some debts can only be paid in blood.”

Before I can hit her, Owen’s hand closes gently around my wrist. “Noelle.”

“Don’t you dare touch me right now,” I whisper, trembling. “You promised me peace.”

He meets my eyes, voice breaking. “I promised you forever. And to keep forever, I have to fight for it.”

Tears spill before I can stop them. “You’re not fighting for forever. You’re gambling it.”

He lets out a breath, soft, regretful. “Maybe. But this time, I’m gambling to win.”

Vale glances at her watch. “Time’s up.”

Rhea steps forward. “I’ll drive him.”

My chest burns. “You’re really doing this.”

Owen nods once. “I am.”

I can’t speak. The room feels too small, too bright, too full of goodbyes.

He walks toward the door, but I block his path. “If you go,” I say, voice shaking, “you don’t just risk your life—you risk mine, too. Because I can’t survive another phone call saying they found your body.”

He brushes a thumb over my cheek, smearing tears. “You survived worse.”

“Not twice.”

His jaw clenches. “If I don’t do this, there will be a twice.”

Vale’s voice is distant now, like an echo. “Mrs. Tate, if you love your husband, let him end this.”

I look at her sharply. “If I love him? That’s exactly why I can’t.”

Owen leans down, pressing his forehead to mine. “I’ll come back.”

I shake my head against him. “You can’t promise that.”

“Then I’ll make it a threat,” he whispers. “Because dying would mean leaving you—and I’m too damn selfish to let anyone else hold you.”

My tears fall faster. “You’re still that man from the stairwell—the one who thinks love is a shield.”

He smiles faintly. “Maybe. But this time, I’m wielding it.”

Vale clears her throat. “We’re leaving.”

Rhea opens the door. Owen kisses me once—hard, final, alive. “Take care of Luna,” he murmurs.
