Bodyguard For A Virgin

Chapter 131

Ch. 131 / 150 May 04, 2026

POV Noelle

Jamie doesn’t let the conversation end when the tea goes cold.

She refills the mugs without asking, the quiet competence of someone who knows this isn’t a moment that can be rushed. Outside her window, the city hums on, indifferent. Inside, everything feels balanced on a thin, unforgiving edge.

“You’re quieter than you were ten minutes ago,” Jamie says, settling back onto the couch. “That usually means you’re deciding something you don’t want to admit yet.”

I wrap my hands around the warm mug, grateful for the grounding. “I think I’ve been deciding on it for weeks. I just didn’t want to name it. And now it feels like if I don’t name it, it will decide me.”

She nods slowly. “That sounds irreversible.”

“I hate that everything suddenly feels like an ultimatum,” I say. “Either he chooses me fully, without caveats, without handling things behind my back—or I have to choose myself in a way that changes everything.”

Jamie studies me. “Do you believe he’s capable of choosing you fully?”

I hesitate. “I believe he wants to. I don’t know if he knows how.”

“That’s an important distinction,” she says.

Before I can respond, my phone buzzes on the coffee table. I glance at the screen and feel my stomach tighten.

Rhea. I hesitate just long enough for Jamie to notice.

“Is that who I think it is?” she asks.

“Yes.”

“Answer,” Jamie says. “If you’re standing on the edge, you need all the information.”

I swipe to accept. “Hey.”

Rhea’s voice comes through calm, steady, professional as ever. “I won’t take much of your time. I just need to know where you are.”

“Physically or emotionally?” I ask.

There’s a brief pause. “Both matter right now.”

“I’m at Jamie’s,” I say. “And emotionally… complicated.”

Jamie raises her mug in a silent toast of acknowledgment.

Rhea exhales softly. “Okay. Then I’ll be direct. Have you decided what you’re doing about Miranda and the video?”

The question hits like a cold splash of water. “No,” I say. “Not completely.”

“I need more than that,” Rhea replies. “Because this situation is escalating.”

Jamie leans closer. “You can put me on speaker if you want.”

I do. Rhea continues, “Miranda’s movements have changed. She’s not just waiting anymore. She’s positioning for leverage. And that video is still her strongest card.”

Jamie frowns. “She’s still threatening to release it?”

“Not explicitly,” Rhea replies. “Which is worse. Silence is pressure.”

I swallow. “Owen says he’ll handle her.” There it is. Saying it out loud makes it sound smaller than it felt in my head.

Rhea’s voice tightens. “That’s not a plan. That’s a control instinct.”

“I know,” I say quietly.

“And?” Rhea presses. “Does he know that you know about the video’s origin?”

“Yes.”

“Does he know she’s prepared to use it if she doesn’t get what she wants?”

“Aha…”

“And he still insists on doing this alone?”

“Exactly.”

Rhea doesn’t hide her frustration. “Then he’s not prioritizing your safety.”

Jamie shifts beside me. “Or her agency.”

“That too,” Rhea agrees.

I close my eyes. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying you’re at a point where waiting becomes a decision,” Rhea replies. “And it’s not a neutral one.”

“What would you do?” I ask.

Rhea doesn’t answer immediately. When she does, her voice is careful. “If this were a mission, I’d say you’re standing at a line of no return. Either you assert your position now—or you accept that someone else will define it for you.”

Jamie nods. “That’s exactly it.”

“I don’t want to blow up my life,” I whisper.

Rhea’s tone softens slightly. “I know. But sometimes not acting does more damage than acting badly.”

I stare at the floor, tracing a crack in the wood with my gaze. “If I push him to choose… I might lose him.”

The words feel final in a way nothing else has.

Rhea speaks again. “There’s something else you should know. She’s been careful not to leave a trail. But she’s also been testing reactions. Yours. Owen’s. Mine.”

“So?” I ask.

“And she’s confident,” Rhea replies. “Which means she believes time is on her side.”

Jamie exhales sharply. “That’s chilling.”

“Yes,” Rhea agrees. “Which is why I need to know what you’re going to do. If you want me to move, to intervene, to protect you legally or otherwise—I need consent.”

I grip the mug tighter. “If you act, it becomes public.”

“Yes.”

“And if I don’t?” I ask.

“Then Miranda controls the pacing,” Rhea says. “Not you.”

I look at Jamie. “I don’t know how to ask him for something he might not be able to give.”

Jamie meets my gaze. “You don’t ask. You state.”

“That feels cruel.”

“No,” she says gently. “It’s honest.”

Rhea adds, “You’re not demanding perfection. You’re demanding clarity.”

Clarity. The word resonates deeply.

“I need to hear him choose me,” I say slowly. “Not in theory. Not in intention. In action. And if he can’t, then I choose myself.”

Saying it out loud feels like stepping onto unstable ground—but also like breathing fresh air for the first time in days.

Rhea nods, even though I can’t see her. “That’s your line, then. I’ll stay alert, but I won’t act without your signal.”

“Thank you,” I reply.

When the call ends, Jamie watches me carefully. “How do you feel?”

“Terrified,” I admit. “And strangely calm.”

“That’s what standing on the edge feels like,” she says.

“I never thought loving him would bring me here,” I say.

“Love doesn’t always bring us where we expect,” Jamie replies. “Sometimes it brings us where we need to decide who we are.”

I nod slowly.

When I leave Jamie’s apartment later, the night air is cool and sharp. Each step toward home feels deliberate, weighted with meaning.

I know what I have to do. I don’t know how it will end, but as I walk, I see this is the moment where everything changes—not because someone is threatening me, or manipulating me, or pulling me apart.

But because I’m done waiting to be chosen.

If Owen wants to stand with me, he will have to do it openly, fully, without shadows or contingencies. And if he can’t—

Then I will step forward alone, not broken, not defeated, but whole. Standing at the edge of something irreversible. Ready, finally, to choose myself if I must.
