Alpha Nocturne's Contracted Mate

432 They Still Had A Long Way To Go

Ch. 432 / 434 May 05, 2026

Felix stared at Aoife in shock as in what had seemed like only a split-second, she had managed to somehow recover from whatever had been happening to her only seconds earlier.

"Aoife.." he frowned, but she shook her head gently and placed a hand on his arm.

"Not now, we'll talk later," She forced out as she turned away from him and moved as if she were ready to face the constructs again but Felix reached out and grabbed her arm, pulling her back to him with a frown of concern.

"Aoife what are you doing? A few seconds ago you were …terrified," he said finally after searching for a word that didn't sound like he thought she was going crazy, "What the hell changed in those few seconds that now suddenly, everything is okay?"

"I promise I'm fine for now," She said gently, and the quick smile that she flashed at him only eased his worry a little bit.

"I really think that maybe you should head back to the medical area," Felix said carefully as Aoife's eyes narrowed at him, "It's safer back there and, Goddess forbid, if you freeze up again I might not be able to pull you out of harm's way again."

"Then don't." Aoife snapped and Felix flinched slightly as she tore her arm away from him, "Look, we don't have time for this. I already said that I was fine now and at the end of the day, all it really comes down to is this; You either trust me, or you don't. Either way, I'm here now and I'm damn well going to do whatever I can to make sure that we succeed here,"

Felix watched helplessly as she turned from him and headed straight towards where the fighting was thickest.

Greyson had watched the interaction between all three of them with sparing glances and as much as it bothered him to consider the possibility that this was a liability here, head other things to worry about right now.

The vanguard had been doing an amazing job at keeping these fleshbound horrors at bay, but Greyson knew that somewhere behind these lumbering bastards were some vastly weaker controllers. The fact that they were chained to the walls told him that their control on these beasts couldn't be as all encompassing as the ones that they had faced on the field, which meant that if they could take the controllers out, then perhaps taking the flesh golems down would take less time.

Finally, a gap appeared in the mass of bodies long enough for Greyson to find his target.

Partially sheltered a few steps away in a smaller alcove, and protected by the slight curve to the corridor were the handlers that he had been looking for, their hands raised and fingers flexing in small precise motions as they mouthed words that he couldn't hear.

"Adam!" Greyson yelled into the communication device so that he would be heard above the noise.

He stiffened instantly and his head turned, his wolfs keen eyes searching Greyson out in a only a few seconds.

"Over there! The handlers! We need to take them down!" Greyson continued, pointing towards where they were obscured from sight.

Adam followed his line of sight and his expression darkened briefly before he nodded and broke away from the fighting, joining Greyson as they sprinted forward, sliding under the construct's wide arcing swing as they focused their attention on the handlers beyond.

They hadn't expected that the construct would react almost instantly and although it wasn't an intelligent counterattack, it was still slightly quicker than they were expecting. As it turned to defend its masters, one arm whipped sideways and clipped Adam hard enough to send him soaring through the air and slam him against the wall, leaving an Alpha sized crater in the bricks he had landed on.

Aoife moved forward without being asked and her hand lifted in a practiced motion, even as he slid to the floor. In a matter of seconds Adam had his feet back underneath him again and he shook himself out of the daze without missing a beat and raced towards his target once again.

Her attention moved on quickly to another wolf that lay bent out of shape on the floor and after a few moments the fighter's body jerked back into alignment, the breath forced back into his lungs. He doesn't stand on his own like Adam did, but that didn't matter. Two of the medical team rushed forward and grabbed hold of his body, pulling him back behind the lines of able bodied fighters to work on getting him back into the fight as quickly as possible.

She huffed to herself in satisfaction as she turned back to the fight. That was all that she needed to do. Stay focused, keep them breathing, keep them fighting, and then, maybe then, they stood a chance at ending this for good.

Greyson hadn't even registered that Adam had disappeared momentarily, he had been too busy aiming his half shifted claws at one of the binding seams that held the stitched flesh together at the knee of the construct that had swung at them.

As they slid through the flesh he felt them catch on what could only be a tendon, but it felt as though it had been reinforced with concrete and he roared in fury as he forced the claws through, severing it completely as a mixture of blood and rotten smelling fluid cascaded over his hands and his forearm.

The construct stuttered momentarily and the handler's fingers twitched in ever more frantic patterns as the construct tried desperately to compensate for the loss of mobility, shifting its weight as best that it could, but it was too heavy.

The knee collapsed inwards on itself and the body dropped to the stone floor, the vibrations rippling through the stone even as the fighters swarmed over it with terrifying ferocity. Greyson didn't waste any time in celebrating that small win, he simply turned and continued moving forward.

Adam reappeared at his side and they closed the remaining distance to the handlers quickly. Greyson leapt through the air with a terrifying snarl as he pierced his claws straight through one of the controllers throats and brought his hands outwards in an arc, severing the controllers head almost completely from its neck and watched with satisfaction as it crumpled to the floor.

Adam threw himself at the second one, seamlessly slipping two curved blades from his belt as he raced towards it, swinging upwards with his blades as soon as he was in combat range and severing the still twitching fingers cleanly from its palm. Without missing a beat he brought both daggers downwards with terrifying precision, straight into the eye sockets of the still screaming handler.

The scream died to nothing as the body fell to the ground and with a sneer of disdain Adam bent forward, pulling both daggers from their resting place and wiping them off on the handlers tattered rags.

Seconds later the sound of yells from behind them caught their attention and as they turned, they watched the last remaining constructs freeze mid motion and topple forward as the fighters below scattered like ants before them.

Greyson and Adam shared a meaningful look before shouting to the warriors and motioning them forward.

It was a good start, but they still had a long way to go.
